    Description

    GENERAL SUMMARY:
    A research technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Stephanie Roberts in the Division of Endocrinology. The laboratory specializes in the neuroendocrine control of puberty and reproduction.

    Specifically, we have projects focused on how different genes affect when puberty occurs and genetic causes of early and delayed puberty.

    The technician will be expected to work independently under the general supervision, execute protocols involving variety of routine and non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures at a professional level.

    Participates in the design and modification of research protocols under the Laboratory Director Supervision. Will be working with research animals (e.g. mice), cell culture, and/or human subjects. Other responsibilities includes composing and presenting sections of research reports, manuscripts or grant application. May have the option of attending research conferences. Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques. Coordinates laboratory activities and undertakes quality assurance programs. Will be responsible for orientating and training additional staff. Will be able to analyze results on her/his own. Technician reports directly to Laboratory Director.


    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Under the Supervision of Principal Investigator, designs and performs research laboratory experiments in the field of reproductive endocrinology, including: a. Preparation and analysis of DNA and RNA, including genotyping
    b. Isolation and analysis of proteins including performing western blotting

    c. Histological studies, including immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization

    d. Cell culture studies

    e. Mouse handling, maintenance of animal colonies and/or performing surgical procedures and collection blood/tissue collection

    f. Recruitment of patients, collection of clinical data, collection and processing of DNA samples, interpretation of genetic testing results


    • Record data, analyzes and summarizes results and presents to the laboratory group. Utilizes computer spread sheets and graphics to prepare data plots and figures.
    • Prepares and maintain laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment.
    • Maintain supplies and inventory, and maintain established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
    • Assist in the training of new lab members.
    • Discusses program, regularly with Principal Investigator.
    • Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    BS OR BA
    New graduate with relevant course or project work


    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
    Computer skills (intermediate level) including word processing and spreadsheet applications required.

    Must be extremely organized and capable of working under pressure.

    Be flexible to adjust schedule in accordance with the needs of the department.

    Ability to identify potential or on-going problems and help develop solutions to such problems.

    Must have the ability to work independently.

    Must possess initiative.


    Must possess good interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, research investigators, other hospital personnel, and external contacts.

    Must have basic computer experience.

    Must be able to function as a team leader under difficult or stressful situations.

    Must be able to work with mice on a daily basis.

    Ability to commit to one to two years of a contract.
