    Description

    Summary

    This specific Peer Specialist role is exclusively available for a Veteran who meets the necessary statutory requirements outlined in the announcement. The Veterans Justice Outreach Program plays a crucial role in the VHA's efforts to prevent homelessness by acting as a gateway to VA and community services for Veterans engaged with the criminal justice system.

    Duties

    The primary goal of the VJP is to collaborate with the criminal justice system to identify Veterans who would benefit from treatment and other essential services. In this position, you will play a key role in helping Veterans reintegrate into the community and commit to their treatment by providing community re-entry planning, service coordination, after-release referrals, and linking them to legal resources. As a Peer Specialist, you will work as part of an interdisciplinary team, supporting physicians and other professionals in a rehabilitation treatment program. Your responsibilities will include assisting Veterans in setting recovery and wellness goals, acquiring and practicing new skills, monitoring their progress, helping in their treatment, demonstrating effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on your own recovery experience, and empowering them to advocate for themselves to access quality services.

    Duties include, but not limited to the following:

    • Participating in the service, training, consultation, and other professional activities of VA health care services as a fully engaged member of the multidisciplinary team.
    • Utilizing personal recovery experiences to model coping techniques and recovery tools, coaching Veterans on skills necessary for self-management of their health conditions and pursuit of personal wellness.
    • Recognizing behaviors indicating difficulty adapting to treatment, documenting appropriately, and promptly reporting concerns to the treatment team.
    • Conducting individual and group meetings to teach Veterans strategies to combat negative self-talk and fears by providing a platform for them to share experiences.
    • Handling crisis interventions and addressing emergent situations for Veterans without explicit instructions.
    • Educating Veterans about available VA and community supports, guiding them on effective utilization in their recovery and wellness journey.
    • Staying informed about current trends in holistic wellness and recovery through reading materials like books, journals, and other relevant resources.
    • Performing additional assigned duties as necessary.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
    Telework: The VA endorses telework to attract and retain skilled individuals in public service, boost productivity, and enhance operational readiness during emergencies. This position may allow telework, eligibility to be discussed in the interview process.
