Job Description Senior Underwriter Job Code 001751 Union Status Non-Union Supervision No FLSA Status Exempt POSITION SUMMARY Position Summary The Senior Underwriter maintains and improves the experience-rating software and reporting applications; ensures the data, reports, and analyses are accurate for management to utilize for effective operational decision-making; and works with the Sales staff to develop profitable renewal rates and proposal rates based on rating modules and underwriting judgment.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring internal and external customer expectations are met for timely and accurate renewals and new business quotes through expert analysis of premium rate development and risk evaluation.

The incumbent also provides expertise, leadership, mentorship, and training to less senior departmental staff. EEO NeuGen is an equal opportunity employer.

COMPANY OVERVIEW NeuGen, LLC is a shared Services organization, founded in November 2018, based out of Madison, Wisconsin. In 1970, the not-for-profit WEA Trust was founded by the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC).

Well known for high-touch, personalized customer service, WEA Trust serves Wisconsin public employees, their staff, and families throughout the state.

In 2018, WEA Trust acquired another Wisconsin-based health plan, Health Tradition, in order to serve both public and private employees in the state.

Today, NeuGen supports both health insurance companies in addition to providing medical management and administrative services to other healthcare companies.

REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES Required Responsibilities % of Time
  • Development and Distribution of Experience Rates Develop rate recommendations for new and renewing experience-rated groups by gathering information from various data sources, analyzing data, calculating rates, verifying work, and making judgments and recommendations. Compare year-over-year risk profiles and loss history information as applicable. Create, maintain, and produce reports for the Sales and Underwriting Departments. Assist Sales in developing strategies to sell new business and renewals. 50
  • Maintain/Improve Experience-Rating Software and Related Reporting Applications Maintain the software programs that perform experience-rating calculations. Continuously evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the software. Recommend and code revisions and enhancements. Test the software to ensure it is responsive and meets the specifications established by the Department. 30
  • Report Preparation and Research Assistance Gather information from a variety of sources to design and execute reports requested by internal and external customers. Generate monthly departmental reports and assist with various rating studies. 10
Leadership/Mentoring:
Assist the Director with the training and development of less senior staff. Mentor (and assist the director to mentor) other department staff. Train department staff on new and current Underwriting policies, procedures, and guidelines. Lead and coach less senior staff on more complex Underwriting work.   • Minimum Bachelors Degree, Mathematics, finance, actuarial science or other related field
  • 7 years experience in finance, actuarial science, underwriting or related field
  • Knowledge of and experience using complex mathematical formulas REQUIRED SKILLS Required Skills
  • Verbal and written skills, including ability to handle angry, difficult, or unreasonable callers, communicate persuasively, explain technical issues, and make group presentations; and the ability to compose clear, concise correspondence, internal policies and procedures, presentations, publications, newsletters, training materials, and narrative reports.
