    In October 2020, VCU Health completed the acquisition of Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, marking a significant milestone.

    Today, VCU Tappahannock Hospital is dedicated to advancing healthcare within our community and neighboring counties, guided by VCU Health's commitment to excellence, affordability, and community impact.

    Situated in the idyllic Middle Peninsula, our hospital serves the Northern Neck region, renowned for its quaint charm and leisurely summers along the picturesque Rappahannock River.


    While VCU Tappahannock Hospital functions as a satellite facility compared to the larger VCU Health Medical Center in Downtown Richmond, Virginia, our standard of care remains uncompromised.

    Equipped with essential departments including Emergency, Critical Care, Operating Room, and Acute Care Units, our hospital thrives as a vital healthcare hub.

    The Medical Technologist (MT) provides accurate and timely testing and results to requesting physicians and other health care professionals for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

    The MT should consistently utilize excellent customer service skills to both internal and external customers at all times. A positive and professional interpersonal style with a strong commitment to the team effort is mandatory.

    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:


    Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.


    Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:


    Certified MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or CLS (NCA) or equivalent, or ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification Certification not required but strongly encouraged if hired before January 2007.


    Experience REQUIRED:
    Minimum of one (1) year of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist

    Education/training REQUIRED:


    Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program or a Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science* in addition to graduation from an NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science with 5 or more years of on the job training in a hospital health care environment in a specific lab discipline performing high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (categorical or generalist certification required).

    Master's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program


    Independent action(s) required:
    Notification of panic values to ordering physicians.

    Customer service-oriented communications.

    Must complete the required number of continuing education hours per year.

    MT II must complete 10 hours per year.

    Participate in teaching new employees, students, residents, etc. in areas that competency is demonstrated.

    Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A


    Additional position requirements:
    Rotating weekends as required Holiday scheduling as required

    On call availability as required and for emergency coverage on any shift.
