    Summary



    This PA position is in the Medical Service Department at the VA Maine Healthcare System located at the Togus location. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.

    THIS OPEN & CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT (OCA) ESTABLISHES A STANDING REGISTER OF ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS, which closes on 6/24/2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 3/28/2024 with subsequent reviews every other week as additional vacancies occur, or on an as-needed basis, until positions are filled.



    Duties


    The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the general supervision of the Emergency Department Director and the Chief, Medical Service and/or his/her designee. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Perform assessments/examinations on initial encounters with unscheduled, emergency and new patients.
    • Obtain a pertinent history and physical examination, including breast and prostate evaluations, and appropriate routine diagnostic tests and x-ray studies necessary to complete the evaluation and determine the need for further health care.
    • Write orders for medications (without countersignature) and for Schedule III through V. This is in accordance with his/her state license and holding of appropriate DEA registration.
    • Performing procedures including: Wound care and debridement, care and flushing of venous access devices, obtaining cultures, drawing blood from peripheral veins or venous access devices.
    • Emergency duties are carried out for patients in life-threatening situations where a physician is not immediately available.
    • Acquires knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice.
    • Provides patient education in an effective manner.
    • Shares medical literature research findings with colleagues to enhance patient care delivery.
    • Participates in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and enhance role performance.
    • Serves as a clinical preceptor to healthcare students.
    • Serves on service level committees or subcommittees when assigned.
    • Researches medical literature and applies evidenced-based medicine to improve clinical practice.
    • Shares medical literature research findings with colleagues to enhance patient care delivery.
    • Uses a body of research to validate or change group practice.
