    Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit


    The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life.

    Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience.

    The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director's Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department's guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics.

    This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

    The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

    Position Summary


    Reporting to the Director of the Smith Center Complex, the Assistant Director of Smith Center Complex & Director of Aquatics is responsible for assisting with the management of day to day and event operations for four facilities: Dean E.

    Smith Center, Koury Natatorium, Carolina Athletics Media and Communications Center, and The Ernie Williamson Athletic Center/Carolina Basketball Museum.

    This position serves as the primary point of contact for Koury Natatorium for meets, events, and daily operations and includes working closely with the swimming and diving program.

    Additional assigned responsibility includes coordination of a variety of activities related to the operation of the men's basketball program that include game-day operations, recruiting events and operations, camps and clinics, and other special events.

    Position also supports major university events, commencement exercises, and additional events and rentals that take place in the Smith Center Complex.

    Other day-to-day duties include daily business processes and operations for the office including financial management, personnel administration, purchasing, security, parking, technical services, key and access control, hospitality, and facilities coordination, planning, and projects.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

    Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

    Requires superior competencies in administrative coordination in order to successfully manage events within the complex. Demonstrated ability to plan, ensure details and requirements for events, and oversee activities necessary for successful execution; and evaluation.

    Exceptional verbal and written skills are mandatory due to the complexity of communication with any number of campus partners and auxiliary agencies and internal and external constituents.

    Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment; demonstrated ability to exercise effective decision making skills.

    Substantial experience in a recreation or athletic setting in facility operations; demonstrated ability to organize and direct work activity of temporary/volunteer and student employees; demonstrated skill and working knowledge of various computer applications.

    Ability to follow University and departmental policies, procedures and practices. Effective communication skills and ability to interact with senior level administrators, coaches, faculty and staff. Ability to handle sensitive and complex issues that arise during planning and the execution of any game day event. Must be extremely organized and a strong leader. Ability to guide and collaborate with executing program activities, objectives and goals.

    Individual should demonstrate high energy, flexibility with work schedules, innovation and demonstrated abilities to recognize potential issues that require effective and efficient problem solving skills and appropriate solutions.

    Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills at all times and to all clients/patrons/coaches/officials/fans/customers.

    Ability to understand, with full awareness, the mission, goals, policies, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the University, the Athletic Department, the ACC, and NCAA.

    Ability to represent the Department of Athletics in a positive and professional manner.

    Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

    Experience in Business administration, sport management/administration, or a related discipline preferred. Certified Pool Operator or experience working in and around aquatic facilities and swimming timing systems. Arena and/or event management experience within college athletics. Familiarity with television broadcasts, including working with TV trucks and crews, video replay equipment and more. Experience with facility projects and updates, including repairs and renovations and working with out outside contractors. Knowledge pertaining to credentials and parking for large scale athletic events.
