    If you love numbers, you may want to look into our Taxation Division Team ) The Taxation Division promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through education, assistance and customer service. The Distribution Accounting Section serves about 200,000 customers each year.

    What We Do :


    The Distribution Accounting Section works with various business tax types including sales, use, county lodging, local marketing and wage withholding taxes.

    The unit is responsible for resolving upfront return errors that are identified through a series of edits/rules.

    The unit is also responsible for balancing credit transactions on accounts as a result of return errors and/or adjustments and issuing refunds when a claim for refund is not required.

    The unit analyzes historical sales distributions comparing revenue for the current period to past revenue periods and analyzes revenue with negative balances for state, local and special district jurisdictions to identify and resolve filing errors that may have caused revenue irregularities.

    The unit works with the top sales and use tax filers to ensure returns and payments are made timely and that errors are resolved before the revenue period closes.

    The Typical Day of a Tax Examiner I :

    As a Tax Examiner I, you will be a production focused worker within the unit, which examines returns and payments for various taxes.

    You can expect to make technical adjustments to returns and payments to maximize the accuracy of the distribution of sales and use tax funds.

    As a Distribution Accounting team member you will:

    • Examine taxpayer accounts including analyzing tax documents, payment remittance, and financials to determine proper accounting, liabilities, jurisdictions, mathematical correctness and calculations.
    • Adjust and correct returns and payments between filing periods.
    • Identify duplicate returns and payments and correct, reverse, refund as necessary.
    • Document pertinent account information within the taxpayer's account, tax type, and filing period.
    • Advise all taxpayers with issues, research inquiries and identify solutions.
    • Understand and interpret tax statute, regulation, department policy and procedure, and provide guidance to taxpayers, preparers and Department of Revenue staff.
    • Respond to phone calls, emails, and web messages initiated by taxpayers.
    • Resolve taxpayer issues, research inquiries, identify solutions.
    • Examine, determine, initiate and approve or deny refunds according to statute, regulation, policy, and procedure.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Must meet one of the following or any combination of experience/education to meet the minimum (MQ) qualifications:

    OPTION 1:
    Two (2) years of customer service experience.

    AND
    High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

    This must be documented in the education section of the submitted application, failure to do so will result in your elimination from consideration.

    OR

    OPTION 2:
    One (1) year of customer service experience.

    AND

    Associate's degree from an accredited institution in accounting, business, economics, finance or a closely related field as determined by the Department.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

    • Experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, economics, or finance
    • Experience using GENTAX
    • Experience interpreting and applying Colorado Tax laws and regulations
    • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel
    • State experience in a work environment in which laws, rules, and regulations are put into place

    Conditions of Employment with the CDOR :

    Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.

    As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy.

    Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations .
