    Job Description and Duties

    The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire an Assistant Chemical Testing Engineer (Asst. CTE) in the Office of Central Laboratories (OCL).

    Under general direction of the Branch Chief, the incumbent performs routine qualitative and quantitative tests and chemical analyses on water, soil, metals, coatings, concrete, cement, and miscellaneous other materials. Also performs physical testing of pavement markers, delineators, channelizers, retroreflective sheeting, engineering fabrics, traffic cones and other commodities. Investigates complaints about defective materials used in the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities, including inspection of work related to the use of these materials. The incumbent is expected to perform all tasks necessary for preparation and completion of tests and analyses such as preparing chemical reagents, cleaning, and assembling laboratory apparatus, sample preparation, recording data and preparation of reports.

    Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Assistant Chemical Testing Engineer Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (, transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.     Working Conditions

    Position located in Sacramento, CA

    Incumbent will normally work in a climate-controlled chemical laboratory under artificial lighting. Incumbent may be exposed to dirt, dust, noise, chemicals, x-rays, and uneven surfaces. Occasional fieldwork is required. Fieldwork will entail working adjacent to heavily traveled streets and highways and work at elevated heights above or beneath steel or concrete structures. Incumbent will be exposed to ambient temperature and humidity conditions, hazardous dusts and/or chemical fumes, and high levels of noise. Use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment will be required when necessary. Occasional overnight travel and nighttime work is required. As a statewide organization, DES adjusts to periods of fluctuating workload to successfully deliver projects. DES employees may be given temporary assignments on DES projects throughout the State as workload demands.

    New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
