    Summary

    The Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP) Senior Social Worker aids the Workplace Violence Prevention Program Coordinator in addressing and managing reports of disruptive behaviors across SAVAHCS system.

    Major duties include:
    • Assists with administrative and clinical aspects of the Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP) including but not limited to the Disruptive Behavior Committee (DBC), Employee Threat Assessment Team (ETAT), Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) Program, Disruptive Behavior Reporting System (DBRS), and the Workplace Behavioral Risk Assessment (WBRA).
    • Clinically assesses and provides interventions to a diversity of individuals from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other backgrounds who may be experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and psychosocial problems.
    • Assists the WVPP Coordinator with oversight of the day-to-day business of the committee, including approving receipts of patient-generated reports, triaging reports, gathering and assessing supporting information, agenda setting for meetings, and follow up actions for all decisions or business items at the bimonthly committee meeting.
    • Conducts individualized, evidence-based, data-driven violence risk and threat assessments to determine the likelihood that a patient's disruptive behavior or a visitor's disruptive behavior will undermine the culture of safety in the SAVAHCS.
    • Engages with the DBC in providing consultation to practitioners and staff working with patients who either demonstrate disruptive behaviors or who pose a significant risk of disruptive behavior with the primary goal of assisting the disruptive patient and ensuring that he/she continues to receive the full range of available health care while reducing the risk of disruptive or violent behavior to others.
    • Participates in monthly Disruptive Behavior Committee Community of Practice and Violence Risk Assessment conference calls provided by the National Workplace Violence Prevention Program.
    • Assists WVPP Coordinator with the education, training, implementation of local and national policies, Directives, and Regulatory Requirements pertaining to disruptive behavior.
    • Assists WVPP Coordinator with the oversight of day-to-day business of the ETAT, including receipt of ETAT cases, assistance with triaging reports, gathering information, interviewing staff as needed, and providing input to team.
    • Assists WVPP Program Coordinator in development Case Status Reports for the Facility Director that includes a summary of actions taken by ETAT to include assessment, data sources and risk management recommendations.
    • Provides support resources for employees affected by workplace violence, including debriefing and education, as well as referrals including, but not limited to, the Employee Assistance Program, Harassment Prevention Program, Alternative Dispute Resolution, or Equal Employment Opportunity.
    • Assists WVPP Program Coordinator with oversight of PMDB Program to ensure program is meeting identified training needs for SAVAHCS.
    • Participates on the facility Code Green team.
    • Assists WVPP Coordinator in the completion of the annual WBRA within required time frames.
    • Provides independent clinical duties to include a full range of social work within commonly accepted standards of social work practice which includes comprehensive biopsychosocial spiritual assessments, documentation, social determinants of health screenings, crisis intervention, risk/suicide assessments, documentation, safety planning, abuse/neglect/exploitation reporting, psychoeducation, resource referrals, coordination of care within SAVAHCS and community stakeholders, discharge care planning, and other services as appropriate.
    • Conducts timely assessment of at-risk Veterans/staff in crisis to identify immediate needs, evaluate risk, and initiate safety plans and interventions as appropriate.
    • Ensures timely warm handoffs, communication, and collaboration during transitions in care for the Veteran.
    • Facilitates liaisons with other health care programs to effectively coordinate services.
    • Conducts and delegates clinical threat/risk assessments to determine recommendations for risk mitigation strategies to use in consultation with VA Providers, clinical staff and support staff; recommends risk relevant clinical interventions.
    • Completes all required documentation for the WVPP to include the submission of Issue Briefs, Congressional Letters, and other facility and VISN/VACO reports professionally and timely.
    • Provides subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the Workplace Violence Prevention Program, ETAT, PMDB offering professional opinions based on policy, best practice and expertise.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements
    • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
    • Licensure: Candidate must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
    • Education: Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for master's degree in social work.
    Preferred Experience: Experience working with people with Serious Mental Illness and with developing and facilitating training is preferred.

    Grade Determinations:

    GS-12 Senior Social Worker Experience: In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.

    In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:

    1. Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management.
    2. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.
    3. Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes.
    4. Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills.
    5. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.
    Assignments. Senior social workers are licensed or certified to independently practice social work at an advanced level. Senior social workers typically practice in a major program area such as but not limited to: Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center or Polytrauma Network Site; a Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center, or a national VHA referral center, such as a national Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or a national Transplant Center, or other program areas of equivalent scope and complexity. The senior social worker may be assigned administrative responsibility for clinical program development and is accountable for clinical program effectiveness and modification of service patterns. Assignments include clinical settings where they have limited access to onsite supervision such as CBOCs or satellite outpatient clinics. The senior social worker collaborates with the other members of the treatment team in the provision of comprehensive health care services to Veterans, ensures equity of access, service, and benefits to this population, ensures the care provided is of the highest quality. The senior social worker provides leadership, direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, staff development, and continuing education programs for assigned social work staff. They serve on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility, VISN and national level, or in the community as deemed appropriate by the supervisor, Social Work Executive or Chief of Social Work Services. This assignment is to be relatively few in number based on the size of the facility/service and applying sound position management.

    Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the work include sitting, standing, walking, driving, pushing equipment and wheelchairs, lifting, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and carrying light items such as papers, books, or other supplies. The incumbent uses a computer and standard office equipment to complete tasks. The emotional demands can be stressful in working with the Veteran/patient population and their families/caregivers. A level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence is essential.
