    Bachelor's degree in a related research/science field, or equivalent specialized experience with IACUC administration preferred.

    Excellent communication skills.
    Ability to exercise judgement in applying federal and institutional regulations to specific cases.
    CPIA preferred.

    Position Description


    This position is responsible for conducting all activities related to the federally-mandated IACUC function of inspecting all animal use areas every 6 months, being the point person for managing all animal welfare concerns, presenting findings to the Animal Care and Use Committee, tracking all use areas, conducting all reports, and managing all related information.

    The position also involves all the responsibilities of a primary IACUC member.

    The responsibilities include the following tasks:


    Schedule semi-annual IACUC inspections for all animal facilities, satellites, embryo incubation areas, and use areas with at least one voting IACUC member.

    Share upcoming 6-month cycle with stake holders.
    Prepare documents for inspections and list animal activities that take place in use areas.
    Communicate with labs regarding upcoming inspections.

    Lead all semi-annual IACUC inspections- Examine lab training records and drug expiration dates, verify work congruence with approved protocol and ensure that standards are met in accordance with The Guide.

    Write follow-up inspection reports.
    Submit semi-annual IACUC inspection reports to other IACUC member(s) who attended inspection for review.

    Email findings of semi-annual IACUC inspections to relevant parties (PIs, lab managers, EH&S, facility managers, facility supervisors, veterinary staff, HCCM managers).

    Update inspection reports as needed.
    Save inspection reports in upcoming monthly IACUC meeting folder.
    File final reports for inclusion in semi-annual program review.
    Track inspection duration.
    Follow-up on any significant inspection or internal reports with involved parties.
    Meet weekly with colony staff.
    Tabulate concerns and save all documentation in upcoming IACUC meeting folder.
    Follow-up with relevant parties with outcome of IACUC meeting.
    Draft and send out internal letters to PIs.
    Attend lab meetings/retraining sessions prior to or after IACUC meetings as necessary.
    Chair and schedule occasional subcommittee meetings.
    Confirm funding and notify PIs about regulatory reports.
    Submit non-compliance report drafts for internal review and signatures and submit final document to OLAW.
    Share reports with relevant agencies.
    Document OLAWs correspondence.
    Maintain key personnel informed of OLAW's responses.
    Maintain "Noncompliance tracker" spreadsheet.
    Perform all functions as primary IACUC member.
    Review documents in monthly IACUC meeting folders.
    Review new protocols and amendments for location information.
    Maintain tracker with location information for all use areas.
    Track animal housing in non-central areas (NCA).
    Manage and track satellite application requests for new satellites and incubation areas.
    Inspect new use areas or satellites.
    Attend all monthly convened IACUC meetings and summarize changes to animal use areas, animal concerns, and other compliance matters.
    Process satellite area approvals.
    Answer researchers' inquiries.
    Participate in semiannual TB screening.
    Provide guidance on controlled substances.
    Document satellite information.
    Track inspection dates of animal facilities and satellites for OLAW annual report.
    Accompany regulatory inspectors to use areas and answer questions and provide all requested documentation.

    Work Format Details

    This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.

    All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).
