    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Administrative and Leadership

  • Plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, and supervise the work of a moderate-sized group of custodial employees engaged in various cleaning and custodial activities
  • Coordinate, supervise and assist in set up furniture for school and facility rentals
  • Train custodial staff in proper work methods and procedures, proper use of equipment, materials and supplies, and on expected levels of performance
  • Assign equipment, materials and supplies; order and maintain an inventory of cleaning materials and supplies
  • Keep records and prepare reports of work accomplished and materials used
  • Meet and confer with school personnel regarding custodian activities
  • Plan and conduct safety meetings ensuring all employees are informed and trained properly
  • Safety and Inspection
  • Conduct daily inspections of the building and grounds for cleanliness and security purposes
  • Lock and secure building; check and activate the fire alarm system
  • Ensure that all safety and security precautions are followed, that equipment and materials are utilized properly, and that established work standards are maintained
  • Report any damage, vandalism or unsafe condition to proper authorities
  • Check expiration dates on fire extinguishers and report to appropriate personnel for maintenance
  • Operational
  • Perform various custodial flooring task, sanitizing and dusting as well as common area cleaning alongside custodial staff
  • Perform and supervise in the operation of custodial equipment such as mops, 2-speed and high speed buffers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, water and carpet extractors, carpet blowers, spotters and ride/walk behind automatic floor scrubber
  • Utilize Kaivac restroom cleaning machine, chair dolly, computers, washer and dryer, pressure washer, two-way communication device, and other various janitorial equipment
  • Maintain grounds around buildings, pick-up paper, cans, trash and debris; clean sidewalks, driveways and parking lots and play areas
  • On a regular basis patrol, monitor and clean areas of the assigned school, building or facility while performing walk through using established procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facility, including turning off lights
  • Report any maintenance problems and/or unauthorized people in building
  • Assist with minor repairs such as replace pencil sharpeners, adjusting desks, open students lockers, open/close valves, etc.
  • Pool Maintenance (Aquatic and Natatorium Centers Only)
  • Perform manual water testing on PH, ORP, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness using the reagents to make sure that the Automatic Control System is working
  • Keep records and prepare reports of work accomplished and materials used
  • Check the pool reading daily and record it in the pool log
  • Perform basic pool maintenance, deck cleaning, backwashing of the filters, the cleaning of the strainers, and inspection of all pool apparatus for cleanliness
  • Support pool manager in preparation of swimming events and coordination of pool rental activities
  • Sweep, vacuum, and clean the pool
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervisor one or more employees
  • Report on employees' work hours and performance; schedule and approve leave time
  • Coach and counsel employees and resolve complaints; initiate disciplinary action if needed
  • Hold regular meetings keeping staff informed
  • Create and assign work area locations and daily assignments
  • Provide training and guidance concerning processes and procedures as well as appropriate equipment usage
  • Qualifications Qualification Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1 year supervisor or leadership role
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in institutional, building custodial work
  • Ability to work various shifts (days, nights, weekends and holidays) and locations within the school district and some after-hours and weekend rentals, if applicable
  • Ability to communicate, read, write, and follow written, and oral instructions in English
  • Ability to schedule, assign, supervise, coordinate, and inspect the work of a moderate-sized staff of custodial employees
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the hazards/safety precautions, methods, materials, and practices used in institutional custodian work and the proper use and care of custodial equipment
  • Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment economically, efficiently, and safely
  • Ability to keep accurate records and to prepare accurate reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, school personnel, students, and the general public
  • Ability to carry equipment such as vacuums on back
  • Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

    The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

    Additional Information
  • Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential tasks, including operating custodian equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, reaching in front of body and stretching overhead. Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment. Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures. Usage of propane gas and battery operated equipment. Most positions require work during evening/night shifts.
