    Candidates selected for written testing will receive a confirmation at the email address provided on the application with notification of the scheduled date and time for the testing session.

    If a passing score is received on the written test, successful candidates will receive an email for the hands on testing.

    Normal Minimum Requirements


    • High School Diploma or equivalent, required
    • Must possess a valid, up-to-date, driver's license
    • Basic understanding of electrical transmission and distribution systems
    • Basic understanding of electrical theory
    • Electrical and/or mechanical experience preferred
    • Physical ability to bend, stoop and lift for extended periods of time
    • Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers and customers
    • Ability to work independently and /or in a team
    • Ability to obtain and maintain Health card

    There will be a three-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a written technical skills test followed by a practical assessment and a behavioral based interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step. We are providing a study outline to prepare for the written technical skills and practical tests and the interview.

    The outline is designed to maximize test results and centralize study times in the areas listed below:


    Step 1:
    Written Technical test. This test will have 50 questions with a two hour time limit.

    Written Technical Skills Test Outline (Have knowledge of the following)


    • Basic math and algebra
    • Basic electrical theory and terms
    • AC circuits
    • Transformer operation
    • TEP Electric System
    • Multimeter Use
    • Safe Work practices

    Step 2:
    Practical Assessment. The purpose of this course is to ascertain a person's ability to perform the work of this position.

    Practical Skills Test Outline (Have knowledge of the following)


    • Mechanical aptitude
    • Creativity skills
    • Problem Solving
    • Working under pressure
    • Follow directions/procedures
    • Communication skills
    • Safe work practices

    Step 3:
    Upon successful completion of the practical assessment, the final step will be the interview stage.

    Behavioral Based Interview

    The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating Tucson Electric Power Core Competencies.

    In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents.

    We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required.

    This type of interview is different than those that you may have taken in the past.

    Advancing From Pre-Apprentice into the Apprenticeship Program


    • It is critical for applicants to understand that entering a Pre-Apprentice position is the preliminary stage for the Apprenticeship Program with TEP.
    • Those selected and indentured must pass the first step test, with a score of 85% or greater, or they will be removed from the program.
    • After the first step test after being indentured has been passed, only one 6-month test may be failed and retaken during the remainder of the apprenticeship program. A failure of the retest shall result in termination from the apprenticeship program.
    • Advance standing can be granted based on a review of education and/or work experience. The Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC) will make this determination.
    • Advancement will be based on skill not time in the position. Apprentices must complete 100% of the related training required in their program appendix.
    • Each Apprentice is required to spend at least 90 percent of their available time for on-the-job learning during each 6-month step.
    • Apprenticeship Programs have very strict guidelines and the expectation is for the applicant to understand and become familiar with the details of the position.

    Position Description:


    An employee who is in the entry classification in the section, and who is expected to perform all the basic duties in connection with construction, operation and maintenance performed by personnel in the section to which he/she is assigned.

    This employee will be expected to move into the apprenticeship program in their respective craft at the time it is offered.

    This Pre-Apprentice period will not be less than one year.


    Position-Related Responsibilities:

    • Assist department personnel in accomplishing their day to day tasks
    • They may perform work as an individual. The work for which they perform will be in conformance with training and safe work practices.
    • Must be able to take directions and have a willingness learn.
    • Will move into the formal apprenticeship when offered
    • Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Must become familiar with the basic skills inherent in the Journeyman classification in which they are aligned and able to do within the confines of their training and ability to perform such tasks safely.
    • This employee possesses the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment associated with their work area.
    • Must have a basic understanding and complies with all TEP Safety rules and regulations
    • May be required (depending on department) to obtain a CDL operators license.
    • This employee must possess an awareness to provide a high level of customer satisfaction.
    • This employee will maintain a high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs and the Company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience.
