THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.
ORDER OF PREFERENCE:
The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High School diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e., Grades Helper, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.
Levels Helper, C, and B
Four (4) years as a Mechanic (Electronic – RAIL), or related experience.
Level A
Five (5) years as a Mechanic (Electronic – RAIL), or experience.
Level AA
Six (6) years as a Mechanic (Electronic – RAIL), or related experience.
Certification/Licensure
Valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Satisfactory completion of an accredited post-secondary school certification program in Electricity, Electronics, Electro-Mechanics
Certification in soldering.

Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
Job Summary:
The Mechanic (Electronic) performs rapid transit vehicle maintenance work involving inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of rapid transit vehicle electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical systems and its related equipment.
The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, electrical/electronic theory, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment and operating systems, associated with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) railcars and repair facilities.
Job Levels:
At each successive grade level of this job (i.e., Grades Helper, C, B, A, and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills, and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.
"AA Lead" Level:In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.
Essential Functions:
Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication and scheduled maintenance on assigned railcar equipment in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, operation manuals and manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance, troubleshoots and tests all vehicle systems, subsystems and components, using precision measuring equipment such as meggars and multi-meters to test for defective wiring and connections, micrometers to check for excessive wear on bushings, bearings and gears.
Observes electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions.
Dismantles devices and removes defective parts. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturer's specifications. Tests and calibrates systems and equipment, to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments.
Maintains railcar vehicle traction motors, motor generators, auxiliary motors and door operators, by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn parts, and lubricating and cleaning bearings and bushings.
Maintains electro-mechanical equipment and devices, including destination signs, cam controllers, unit switches, motor controls, solenoid valves and switches, and system interfaces (trainline circuitry, electrical couplers), by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective and worn parts.
Maintains electronic systems, solid state and control equipment, power supplies, amplifiers and logic boards by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests.
Implements Engineering Modification Instructions (EMI's) and Maintenance Service Instructions (MSI's) to railcar electrical, electro-mechanical and mechanical systems. Performs new component acceptance testing.
Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of transit car equipment and related components by using the proper forms, tags or entering data into the Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS).
Attends on-the-job and formal training classes. Assists mechanics in higher classifications in their assignments, or provides job specific training to mechanics in lower classifications.
Responds to and assists in emergencies which require movement of trains involved in incidents, accidents or derailments, using rerailing equipment such as Portable Hydraulic Rerailing Equipment (PHRE).
Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
Operates Authority vehicles between work locations, as required.
