    Summary You will serve as a SHIP PILOT in the Navy Region Northwest, Port Operations Department of COMMANDER, NAVY REGION NORTHWEST.

    Responsibilities You will pilot vessels in the waters of Puget Sound and adjacent water, from Port Angeles to Alki Point, including the ports of Port Townsend (Indian Island), Everett, Bremerton, Seattle, and the Hood Canal (Sub-base Bangor facilities).

    You will explain and point out on charts the route to be followed, the number and placement of tugs to be used etc.

    You will practice the principles of navigation and have complete familiarity with the Rules of the Road.

    You will provide safe pilotage services to vessels transiting the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound to include commercial piers utilized by naval vessels.

    You will be responsible for determining whether movements can be made safely under adverse weather conditions, such as high winds, heavy rain, or snowfall.

    You will travel to port nearest to ship's scheduled route when entering Puget Sound and board launch or tug for transportation out to the ship.

    Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

    Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

    This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

    The Screen-out Element for this position is:

    ABILITY TO PERFORM COMMON TASKS INCLUDING:

    • 1) Proceeds to the bridge and discusses route, speed, port conditions, and dock/pier conditions with ship's Captain; 2) Boards a vessel in port and proceeds to the bridge, discussing with the ship's Commanding Officer/Master pertinent information such as forward and aft drafts, whether the ship is single or multi-propellered, engine speed used for maneuvering at one-third, two-thirds, and full speeds, and any moving constraints or vessel peculiarities; 3) Piloting, mooring, anchor handling, dry docking and undocking ships. . I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

    Incumbent is required to hold the following Licensures:

    Pilots must possess and maintain current licenses as either a Master of Unlimited Tonnage (oceans or inland), or as Master 1600 ton Freight and Towing, including endorsements for Radar Operator, FCC VHF radio permit, watch keeping certificate, and Puget Sound Pilotage. While working to obtain specific endorsements, pilots will be required to submit verification of endorsements and progress in examination cycles. Failure to obtain and maintain all endorsements will result in personnel action. ***Pilots must possess specific endorsements for the Main Channel Areas of Puget Sound from Alki Point to and including Port Angeles as well as the terminal ports of Everett, Hood Canal, Seattle, and Bremerton. Endorsements not currently obtained for Bremerton to Seattle (up to West Point) are required within 6 months of being placed in this position and the remainder of endorsements within 18 months of the date placed in this position.
