Research Development Associate for Strategic Initiatives
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Research Development is a pan-University office serving the broad faculty research and scholarship community at UNC-Chapel Hill.
ORD supports the Vice Chancellor for Research's campus-wide research enterprise that attracts over $1 billion in extramural funding.ORD's mission is to expand the University's capacity for innovative, groundbreaking research and scholarship by resourcing Carolina faculty and postdoctoral researchers as they work to address challenging problems for the benefit of the citizens of North Carolina.
The office's services include scholar consultations, pre-award and project team formation, funding search and project alignment, as well as a suite of proposal development services.
The office also supports and implements several strategic initiatives on behalf of the Vice Chancellor for Research, including the Creativity Hubs, the Idea Seed Grant Program, and co-funds the Arts and Humanities Award Program with the Institute for the Arts and Humanities.
Finally, ORD administers Carolina's selection process for limited submission funding opportunities.Position Summary
The Research Development Associate for Strategic Initiatives will serve as the Office of Research Development's (ORD) focal point for identifying relevant federal, public, and private sector funding opportunities and supporting the assembly of responsive project teams.
The role will regularly monitor pertinent information sources, gather intelligence about funding opportunities, with a focus on state, and federal non-NIH funding opportunities with the goal of identifying, and supporting the Director in developing project officer relationships and other extramural partners.
This position supports teams of UNC scholars and researchers to capture and respond to these opportunities; contribute to proposal development; technical writing; and strategic networking and relationship building to form research teams and affinity groups.
This position will also maintain internal datasets of UNC CH expertise and interests to match them with appropriate grant opportunities, while developing networks of interdisciplinary faculty across UNC schools, departments, and research centers and institutes.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsRelevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceMinimum of 2 years working on business development and/or projects with a spanning STEM and/or biomedical-related federal contracting opportunities.
Proven ability to effectively represent an organization and win new business, and experience contributing to winning proposals.
Strong coordination and collaboration skills with proven experience applied in translational research/deliverables-driven context.
Excellent skills in networking, presentation, and oral and written communication.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure and multi-task.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with DHHS/NIH, DOD, DOE, USDA or other key partnering organizations is preferred.
Strong working knowledge of proposal capture software preferred.
