    General Job Information

    Job Summary

    This position is located in the Department of Corrections (DOC), Facilities Maintenance Division. The mission of DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District of Columbia by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, hot water, cold water, and sewage. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the completion of guiding the workforce and on-the-job training to inmate workers, as necessary, as well as security in the performance of the work assigned.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Performs the installation and maintenance on return pipes and hot and cold-water lines; the laying and connecting of water and sewage lines; the installation of new and repaired plumbing and heating equipment, , pressure reducing valves, make-up water and blow-down tanks, toilets and wash bowls, scullery sinks, traps, valves, pumps and a variety of oil and gas appliances. Works from building plans, blueprints, work orders, and drawing/sketches, layout work and personally performs the repair and maintenance of steams lines and plumbing lines/fixtures throughout DOC. Obtains needed supplies and materials, assures that proper materials and equipment are available to complete each task in a reasonable time schedule, lays out work, and subsequently assigns inmates to specific tasks, as appropriate.

    Provides on-the-job training to inmate workers. Monitors the work of inmate workers including, but not limited to, packing valves, repairing or replacing gaskets, packing, repairing, or replacing expansion joints; repairing and maintaining numerous circulating pumps ranging from 3⁄4" to 8", and monitoring the repair and cleaning of several hot water storage tanks ranging in size from 200 to 1000 gallons. Plans and lays out routing, placement, slant, slope, fall and proper operation of new and existing systems and equipment. Installs, modifies, and repairs systems by locating and trapping main lines, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers, and determining and installing valves, traps, and unions, as needed. Installs seats, hooks up and tests equipment, such as tubs, toilets, showers, fire sprinklers, etc. Locates leaks or obstructions and repairs or clears them. Cuts, bends, and assembles pipe fittings. Prepares and submits reports, including, but not limited to, daily work reports listing work accomplished, materials used and job status; accident reports; disciplinary reports; squad count reports, and inmate progress reports.

    Qualifications and Education

    ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION

    Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.

    Measurement and Layout

    Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

    Trouble shooting

    Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading )

    Licensures and Certification

    Journeyman or Master Plumber license in the District of Columbia.

    Backflow Certification is preferred.

    Working Conditions

    Most of the work is performed in a correctional institution with and around inmates. Adherence to institutional safety and prevention guidelines is required. Incumbent is frequently called upon to work in excavations under adverse conditions, , wet, muddy, cold, or in closely cramped areas with extreme high temperatures; , subject to severe burns and scalding, mashed fingers and hands, and injuries resulting from falling or rolling pipes.

    Tour of Duty: Incumbent is subject to recall at any time, required to work rotating shifts and weekends, and is subject to 24-hour call.

    Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by the Fraternal Order of Police.

    Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability Safety Sensitive . The incumbent must be able to pass a criminal background check; therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history in order to be appointment to this position. You will be subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Department of Corrections Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

    A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.
