    The kitchen at The Northwest School aims to produce delicious, healthy meals using locally produced and organic ingredients whenever possible for both students and faculty.

    Position Summary: The Northwest School is seeking a foodservice professional to cook and serve lunch for 500+ students and faculty. This position will work closely with a team of other chefs to consistently produce high-quality, nutritious meals on a daily basis. In addition, this position will actively contribute to the success of the program by building relationships with students and faculty; maintaining a safe and sanitary environment at all times; offering menu suggestions; and supporting other team members as needed. Successful candidates will have great communication skills, be dependable and trustworthy, be keenly aware of detail, and able to work independently

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Cook and serve meals to students, faculty and community members, including cold and hot items for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner depending on assigned day part.
    • Operate a variety of kitchen equipment and tools for small and large batch production with a full range of advanced classical and contemporary cooking, plating and garnishing techniques.
    • Able to read menus, follow complex recipes and multiple-step prep lists, estimate production requirements, and keep accurate records to support future menu and production planning.
    • Exercise good culinary judgment when preparing, seasoning, cooking, tasting, and portioning breakfast, lunch, dinner and special events with minimal supervision.
    • Be innovative in use of seasonal produce and flexible with last-minute menu changes and dietary requests.
    • Understand ingredients and allergens in dishes, and what alternatives are available students and faculty with dietary sensitivities, intolerances, and allergies.
    • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment at all times; execute daily and weekly cleaning tasks in addition to periodic deep cleaning of the kitchen, dining room and storage areas.
    • Adhere to King County public health food safety and sanitation standards and other local, state and federal regulations.
    • Receive, store and rotate inventory properly using FIFO method; check all incoming orders for accuracy; alert supervisor of any inventory issues or needs.
    • Interact with faculty, students and visitors in a positive and professional manner that is consistent with the school's value of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
    • Comply with all school safety and risk management policies and procedures; report accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
    • Participate in school meetings and activities as the schedule allows, including all-faculty meetings, committee meetings, class trips, and other special events.
    • Direct students during environment period.
    • Contribute menu and recipe ideas with consideration of seasonality, cooking methods and equipment, cost, dietary restrictions, quantity, taste and community culture.
    • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • 5 years of experience in a high-volume kitchen
    • Able to read and develop recipes; advanced knife skills and knowledge of classical and modern cooking techniques in small and batch cooking.
    • Able to work both productively and appropriately with middle and upper school students in performing job duties.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a team.
    • Current Washington State Food Worker.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Culinary Degree and/or Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years' experience in a large scale food production kitchen.
    • Experience working in a school setting.
    • Servsafe Certificate.
    • Knowledge of HACCP and Department of Health Regulations.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Stand, walk, bend and lift for several hours at a time, including all or nearly all of each work day
    • Regularly hold, lift, carry and otherwise use and or transport heavy objects, including food products, equipment and supplies.
    • Regularly lift and carry items/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. and periodically lift and carry items in excess of that weight.
    • Regularly stoop, twist, bend, pivot, squat, stretch, extend, and reach over head and below waist.
    • Maintain balance, including while walking, using heavy equipment, carrying several items, or lifting/transporting food, debris, etc.
    • Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments
    • Must be able to work in and around fumes and odors.
    Compensation:
    Hourly rate of $20-23 per hour based on skills and qualifications.
