JOB OVERVIEW
Schedule:
Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) for 3-4 hours each day between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm. On the working weekend, employee will be also be on-call.
Flexible weekday hours if available.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Supervisor, the indirect supervision of the Medical Director, and the general supervision of the Juvenile Justice Center Director or designee, performing skilled nursing and administrative duties utilizing sound, independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Adhere to all Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies, and directives.
Maintain confidentiality of juvenile's information and documentation necessary to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
Complete medical histories and physical assessment of juveniles; and confirm medication orders.
Collect laboratory specimens, including but not limited to venipuncture, urine samples, and urethral swabs.
Obtain and dispense medications, as directed by physician.
Ensure medical work areas are sanitary.
Accurately records relevant patient and medication data and observations.
Communicate dietary needs of detainees to kitchen staff.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, health care providers, and detainees as well as their family members.
Maintain regular contact with Unit Physician regarding juveniles' medical condition and needs, and ensure medical administrative records are accurate and up-to-date.
Receive and follow dentist, psychiatrist, or physician verbal and written standing orders.
Observe, adhere to, and promote all JJC security directives, and actively participate in the security measures of the JJC.
Ensure adequate medical supplies are on hand.
Provide health teaching, counseling, and guidance.
Coordinate care for detainees with special needs and disabilities.
Respond to and assist with medical and psychiatric emergencies at a level within the scope of nursing practice and licensure.
Schedule appointments and/or tests with healthcare providers, as directed.
Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
Peripheral Duties
Attend monthly unit meetings.
Participate in future development of unit programs.
Assist in treatment of Sarpy County personnel, as needed or directed.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Associate's degree* in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Six (6) years* experience as a pediatric or school nurse or a nurse in a juvenile correctional facility.
Must be a Registered Nurse with current nursing license from Nebraska or a compact state recognized by the Nebraska Board of Nursing at the time of hire, and maintain the license in good standing throughout the course of employment.
Must be certified in basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and maintain certification throughout the course of employment.
*Approved combination of training, education, and/or work experience that would provide equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered and substituted for the stated education and/or experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of how, and the ability, to provide care to a diverse population of juveniles
Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and techniques and medical terminology
Knowledge of pharmaceuticals necessary to administer medications appropriately
Skill in composing clear, concise written documentation
Ability to exercise objective, independent judgment and discretion
Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing
Ability to work independently and carry out project assignments to their completion
Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information including, but not limited to, juveniles' medical information/records, department communication/documents, and other similar information
Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal or written direction
Ability to utilize sound judgment in stressful and emergency situations, analyze situations quickly and objectively, and adopt quick effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances
Ability to operate standard tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential function of a Registered Nurse, as well as computer, Microsoft Office and specialized software, law enforcement radio, multiline phone, calculator, fax , scanner and copier.

The physical demands and working environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Work is performed indoors in a secure detention facility. Incumbents in this position may be exposed to infectious/communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and potential risk of injury from distraught juveniles. Noise levels are typically moderate but at times could be extreme. Work may be fast-paced when dealing with multiple priorities and/or emergency situations.
Work hours may include holidays, weekends, and irregular duty assignments. Work hours are subject to call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in the event of a crisis. During an emergency as declared by the Sheriff, employees' shifts, hours, and duties may be established and leave provisions may be cancelled or restricted.
Work requires physical activity including frequent periods of sitting/remaining stationary and walking/moving about as well as occasional standing/remaining upright, bending, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift, maneuver, and/or move up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate/manipulate equipment (use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects/tools).
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing, speech, smell, and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, and color vision as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk (verbal exchange) and hear within normal ranges.
