- A PICC nurse is a specialized type of nurse who specializes in the insertion and management of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs).
- A PICC is a long, narrow tube that's placed into an artery in your arm.
- It allows blood to flow from your arm to your heart while providing access to your veins for intravenous medications or fluids.
- Assisting physicians with procedures such as administering injections or drawing blood
- Providing education about medications and their uses to patients and families
- Ensuring that the patient's condition is monitored constantly during and after the procedure to ensure safety
- Communicating with other medical staff members to ensure optimal care and treatment of the patient
- Performing physical assessments of patients to identify any health issues that may impact treatment plans
- Administering medications, vaccinations, or other therapies as ordered by the physician or as part of standard nursing practice
- Using computer software to record patient information such as vital signs, medications, and laboratory test results
- Teaching patients about their illness or injury and how it will be treated
- Preparing the surgical site by cleaning it, applying antibiotics, and covering it with sterile drapes or towels
