    Job DescriptionSummary:
    The successful candidate will assist the attorneys with checking into the Court Parts, speaking to the clients in court on the status of the court case, submitting, conforming and serving Orders to Show Cause, paying off cases that are ready to discontinue, Preparing Orders to Show Cause, Stipulations and Motions. Participation in our Universal Access day is required and includes interviewing clients to determine eligibility for our programs and for legal representation. Paralegals will report to the staff attorneys and supervising attorney at NAICA.

    Responsibilities:
    The Legal Assistant is responsible for, but not limited to:
    • Assist clients in the office with questions regarding their court case
    • Assist Attorneys with cases in Bronx Housing Court and NYCHA Part
    • Submit, conform and serve legal documents
    • Prepare legal agreements, documents, motions, and orders to show cause, assist attorneys;
    • Judge the merits of court cases that we are assigned by the court, the Department of Social Services, or self-referred
    • Provide oral and written translation assistance for attorneys who represent non-English speaking clients
    • Advocate with various organizations and government agencies on behalf of vulnerable, low-income tenants to ensure clients access or maintain public benefits

    Professional & Personal Qualifications:
    • High School diploma is a must; some college is preferred with comparable experience in a legal setting or Paralegal Certification with comparable experience in a legal setting
    • Ability to handle stressful environments
    • Strong team-building skills
    • Professional ethics and integrity
    • Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills
    • Demonstrated ability to speak, read and write in Spanish
    • Superb and meticulous attention to detail
