    The East Campus OR provides care for patients undergoing various surgical procedures including Gynecology, General, Urology, Robotics, Oncology, Orthopedics (Joint Replacements, Sports medicine, and Oncology), Ophthalmology, ENT, Plastic, and Interventional Pulmonology.

    Staff work 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts, covering call on off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.

    As part of a remarkable organizational effort, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is now granting a bonus of up to $15,000 for all Certified Surgical Technicians. Surgical Technicians must hold a valid certification through NBSTSA.

    Sign On Bonus Amounts:
    Full time $15,000 Part Time: $7,500

    Eligibility Guidelines & Payout Terms: - $15,000 sign-on bonus for Surg Techs

    - New hire to BILH system or a previous employee who left in good standing and returning to BILH after 1 year
    - If a previous employee and returning under 1 year will be eligible for $10,000.00 retention bonus (see guidelines)
    - Bonus to be paid out in 3 installments as long as the employee is in good standing:
     $5, days after starting
     $5,000—6 months after starting
     $5, year from the start

    Important Details:

    - Full-time status at BIDMC is considered for schedules greater than or equal to 30 hours per week; part-time status is 20 to 29 hours per week. Please note, per diem employees are not eligible for sign-on bonuses.

    - Please note, sign-on bonuses are subject to change based on the organization's hiring needs and will be determined by Talent Acquisition continuously. BILH/BIDMC Talent Acquisition reserves the right to modify sign-on bonus eligible jobs and amounts at any time.

    Job Description:

    Job Summary: The Surgical Technician I is an individual who is certified and educated to perform surgical technology services that contribute to safe, quality, and fiscally responsible patient care. The individual is a novice who practices with maximum guidance and direction. Preceptor dependent, consistently requiring assistance. After orientation, the individual practices at the advanced beginner level and can work with guidance and direction, often needing assistance.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    • Collaborates with the circulating nurse before a surgical procedure to execute the plan of care by preparing the operating room, gathering and preparing supplies, instruments, and equipment, preparing and maintaining the sterile field using aseptic technique, and ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
    • During the intraoperative phase of patient care, anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgeon and other team members by monitoring the sterile field and providing the necessary instruments and supplies.
    • Performs tasks at the sterile field as directed in an operating room setting, including passing supplies, equipment, or instruments, sponging or suctioning an operative site, preparing and cutting suture material, transferring and irrigating with fluids, transferring but not administering drugs, handling specimens, and assisting in counting supplies and instruments with the circulating nurse.
    • Recognizes, intervenes, and reports situations that hinder patient safety. Safeguards patient privacy and maintains confidentiality. Awareness of patient rights and legal, moral, and ethical implications of actions.
    • Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities related to equipment and instrumentation needed for cases to follow in the assigned room. Recognizes and reports problems related to kits, equipment, or supplies.

    Required Qualifications:

    • High School diploma or GED required.
    • Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required., and Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) required within 1 year of date of hire.
    • 0-1 years related work experience required.
    • Graduate of an accredited education program for surgical technologists or has completed a training program for surgical technologists in the United States Military or Public Health Service.
    • Holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist credentialing body accredited by the National commission of Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.
    • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

    • Problem Solving: Ability to address varied problems, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge, and skills based on general precedents.
    • Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when faced with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.
    • Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.
    • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families, and external customers.
    • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
    • Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of the immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
    • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem-solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

    Physical Nature of the Job:
    Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The job is physically demanding, and the employee needs to stand and/or move around for the majority of their shift.
