Overview

Under administrative direction, the purpose of the position is to perform administrative and lead duties to maximize automotive vehicle, school bus and automotive equipment operation through efficient repair and maintenance practices to extend the service life of each item.

Employees in this classification perform advanced skilled mechanical services and repair work for both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.

Additionally, employees in this classification are responsible for scheduling and assigning work to co-workers and inspecting tasks upon completion for adherence to technical specifications and principles of safe vehicle operation.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSResponds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.

Provides planning, organization, coordination and direction in school district maintenance and repair activities associated with fleet mechanical trades.

Works collaboratively with district fleet services personnel, other applicable departments, private/public contract service providers and school district administration in planning and coordinating tasks and projects.

Functions independently or leads work crews engaged in the school district fleet maintenance projects and tasks.
Processes work orders accurately and distributes and manages related work flow. No more than 5% returned/incomplete rate on vehicle repairs. No more than 10% return/incomplete rate on school bus inspections.
Maintains materials, parts, supplies, and manpower usage records for district inventory accounting purposes.

Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, and materials.

Responds to and takes appropriate action in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine or otherwise prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions.

Prioritizes and coordinates project specifics required for fleet; acts as shift leader and delegates tasks to personnel under charge.

Inspects progress of on-going maintenance and repairs; provides upper-level management with information concerning project status or any relevant special concerns; ensures adherence to approved specifications and guidelines.

Conducts Quality Assurance programs.

Ensures adherence to prescribed preventative maintenance schedules and established district safety, environmental, technical training and accident prevention policies and standards.

Receives and critically reviews maintenance, service, repair and/or inspection orders and requests, as well as any preliminary plans and proposals to determine feasibility/advisability.

Plans, schedules and/or conducts required technical training to ensure the district fleet services' personnel are current on maintenance procedures and policies.

Trains personnel in the use of computer/electronic devices and related software.
Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS.

With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONSWhile the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Inspect school buses, road test vehicles, respond to all types of road emergencies, utilize computer/electronic devices to analyze various related electrical and electronic systems; utilize PC and handheld devices, verifies accuracy of payroll input and submits documentation; fuel inventory and tracking daily usage of all types of fluids.

Performs related duties as directed.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED required; a minimum six (6) years progressively knowledgeable and technically skilled work in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles both diesel and gasoline, Demonstrated advanced skill level with specialty certifications


ASE certification:

Master School Bus Technician Certification preferred; previous experience as a shop foreman/supervisor preferred; technical knowledge of applicable laws, codes, ordinances or other regulatory standards governing the operation of fleet services or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Must have a valid CDL class "B" license, with passenger endorsement or must obtain within six (6) months of hiring date and maintain throughout tenure in position; must maintain a valid School Bus Inspector certificate throughout tenure in position.

Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of references, descriptive, design and advisory data and information.

Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

ADA COMPLIANCEPhysical Ability:

When assisting personnel under charge, tasks can involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors:

When conducting inspection duties, tasks may present potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, fumes, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, electrical currents, bright or dim lighting, and toxic/poisonous agents.
