    The University of New Mexico National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), and the Department of Medicine, Divisions of Molecular Medicine and Hematology/Oncology, and the Department of Pathology at the UNM School of Medicine, invite applications from scientists and physicians with expertise in fundamental to translational and translational to clinical research focused on gastrointestinal malignancies.

    The successful applicant will also provide leadership and scientific expertise UNMCCC Research Program and Multidisciplinary Scientific Group in Gastrointestinal Cancers.

    The multiethnic populations of New Mexico (primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White) have a very high incidence of cancers of the colon, liver, and gallbladder and are particularly affected by striking disparities in the incidence and mortality of gastrointestinal malignancies, affording many unique research opportunities.

    The UNMCCC and UNM School of Medicine have an outstanding and highly collaborative cadre of investigators from multiple specialties (GI Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Pathology, and Laboratory and Population Sciences) focused on developing innovative methods for early detection and screening of these cancers, for cancer behavioral and cancer control interventions to overcome disparities, in discovery-focused laboratory investigations, in translational research using primary human tissue samples and animal model systems, and in clinical research focused on the development of investigator-initiated and early phase clinical trials.

    Applications are invited from mid-career scientists and physicians (M.D., M.D/Ph.
    D., or Ph.
    D.) trained in any oncology relevant specialty with expertise in research relevant to the study of these cancers.

    Successful applicants will have a sustained track record of research-focused academic accomplishments with peer-reviewed extramural funding (NIH, NCI, or equivalent); expertise in fundamental, translational, or clinical cancer research; and, the ability to develop and lead highly collaborative multidisciplinary research teams.

    Significant resources, including Endowed Chairs and Professorships, excellent salaries, outstanding laboratory space and research resources, clinical research infrastructure, and comprehensive start-up packages are available.

    Opportunities also exist for academic leadership roles and Senior Leadership positions within the UNMCCC.


    The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius.

    The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity.

    The Center treated 12,000 unique patients in FY17, 15% of whom participated in therapeutic interventional studies and 35% of whom participated in interventional studies.

    The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Cancer Health Disparities; Cancer Genetics, Epigenetics, and Genomics; Cancer Cell and Systems Biology; and Cancer Therapeutics.


    These programs house several national centers including:
    The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center ), one of the nation's 6 Chemical Biology Consortium Centers of Excellence in The NCI NExT Program; The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling ), one of 13 NIH National Centers for Systems Biology; and a NIH Clinical and Translational Sciences Center.

    Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors.

    The UNMCCC is the center of a collaborative statewide cancer clinical trials and health delivery research network and is funded by a NCI NCORP Grant (Minority/Underserved), and is also a member of the ORIEN National Cancer Precision Medicine Network ).

    Center members have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications


    • PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent graduate degree
    • If MD or MD/PhD, board certification in an oncology relevant specialty (hematology/oncology, pathology, surgery/surgical oncology
    • Strong track record of sustained accomplishments (continual peer-reviewed funding, impactful publications in cancer-focused research (laboratory, translational, or clinical) in gastrointestinal malignances
    • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. (this is not a J-1 Visa opportunity)
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Research focus synergistic and collaborative with UNMCCC Research Programs and investigators
    • Academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment to Associate or Full Professor
    • Leadership experience and expertise in building multidisciplinary research teams and developing multi-investigator grants and programs
    • Experience in training, education, and mentoring
