    I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

    Job Description Summary:

    Founded in 2015, the Program on Extremism at George Washington University has quickly
    become a leading research center on all forms of extremism. The Program spearheads
    innovative and thoughtful academic inquiry, producing empirical work and developing pragmatic
    policy solutions that resonate with policymakers, civic leaders, and the general public. Its
    partnerships with some of the world's most prominent universities, think tanks, media outlets and
    governmental agencies are a testament of the Program's research quality, independence and
    innovative approach.

    The Program on Extremism's paid, term-limited research assistant program offers undergraduate
    and graduate students, recent graduates, and post-grads an exciting opportunity to participate in
    the Program's groundbreaking research by assisting full-time staff on a plethora of research
    projects. Specific tasks for research assistants vary based on the Program's changing slate of
    projects; in general, research assistants are expected to be able to:

    ● Conduct open-source research on issues related to terrorism and extremism.
    ● Assist full-time staff in preparing and editing reports, policy papers, and other analytic
    products.
    ● Provide support for ongoing Program deliverables, research streams, and analytic
    products.
    ● Maintain primary source databases for ongoing research projects.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Successful research assistant candidates vary; we accept applications from current
    undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and post-grads with backgrounds in
    various fields, including (but not limited to): political science, international relations, study of
    religion, social and forensic psychology, and data science/statistics.
    ● Applicants must demonstrate previous research experience on issues related to
    terrorism, violent/non-violent extremism, or political violence.
    ● Subject matter knowledge related to the nuances of extremism in the United States is
    preferred.
    ● Applicants must be proficient in standard Microsoft Office programs
    (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/etc.).
    ● Language skills are a plus, as is experience with social media analysis and/or use of data
    analysis software (including SPSS/Stata, R, Python, etc.).
