    Substation Electrical Engineer

    Job Summary

    Power Engineers, Inc. is actively seeking an experienced, energetic, self-starting team member with a strong electrical engineering background to perform engineering activities for electrical substations. Classified as an Electrical Engineer II or III, this individual will work with our Substation design teams out of our Power Delivery Substation Department in our Richmond, Virginia office. A hybrid and/or in-office work environment is preferred however, a remote role may be considered and is dependent on the individuals level of experience and proven ability to work remotely.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    The Electrical Engineer will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with POWERs mission statement and our culture. The Electrical Engineer is expected to support the Department Manager/Area Lead (DM/AL) in achieving the goals of the department, maintain POWERs high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible assisting with developing, maintaining and strengthening client relationships within the region.

  • Support AL/DM with the management of relationships with alliance clients
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and quality of assigned projects
  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage substations including, but not limited to One-line diagramsSchematicsWiring diagramsSCADACommunicationsStation physical layoutsSections/ElevationsCable and conduit plans and detailsGround grid design and detailsFoundation plans and detailsStructural plans and detailsControl enclosure design and detailsLightning protection plansYard lighting plansBills of Materials
  • Inter-discipline coordination activities
  • Specify and select substation equipment
  • Contribute to substation equipment specifications
  • Construction support
  • Facility studies
  • Site visits
  • Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients
  • Support Project Manager and Project Engineer with project reporting needs
  • Support proposal development
  • Support the mentorship and training of other team members
  • Shall understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs
  • Occasional travel
  • Required Education/Experience

  • Ability to function as a Substation Electrical Engineer for the Richmond location of our Substation Business Unit.
  • BSEE (BS Electrical Engineering), BSEET (BS Electrical Engineering Technology) degree, or equivalent technical education
  • Three or more years of experience in substation design
  • Experience in 15kV through kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards
  • Experience filling the role of electrical engineer for several substation projects occurring concurrently
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and Word
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size
  • Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others
  • A strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship
  • Desired Education/Experience

  • Five to eight or more years of experience in substation design
  • Experience in kV through kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards
  • Professional Engineering license (PE)
  • Experience managing people on a project team
  • Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer)
