    Position OverviewThe School Social Worker/Clinical Counselorwill serve as a member of the Clinical Services Department, which is dedicated to working collaboratively with all school personnel (teachers, administrators, support staff) to remove the barriers which prevent scholars from accessing instruction.

    The worksite and tour of duty for this position are located in the New Beginnings Youth Development Center, which is a juvenile detention facility.


    RequirementsResponsibilitiesResponsibilities will include but not be limited to:

    Counseling students individually and in groupsCompleting diagnostic assessments to identify student needsServing as a member of school-based teams to support scholars and provide confidential guidance to staffParticipating in IEP, MDT, Levels' and manifestation hearingsFacilitating professional development and training opportunities for the Maya Angelou SchoolsMaintaining a comprehensive, confidential file on all studentsDeveloping protocols for maintaining confidential clinical files and referral process to follow-up on secured dataCollaborating with the rest of the Clinical Services Department to recruit, select, train, and supervise graduate mental health interns from local colleges and universitiesQualificationsMaster's degree in social work or mental health/community/school counseling.

    License is mandatory.

    If LGSW or LGPC, must have two years of working experience and be LICSW or LPC-eligibleOSSE certification is mandatoryExperience working in juvenile detention/secure facilities is preferred, but not mandatoryExperience working in community-based mental health, family health/mental health, and or public school settingMust have strong skills in documenting efforts and interventionsMust have a commitment to working from a strength-based and/or youth development perspectiveSite DescriptionThe Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings is a long-term juvenile facility in Laurel, MD.

    It serves youth ages 13-21 and is located inside New Beginnings Youth Development Center. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

    Our mission at the Maya Angelou Academy is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill their academic or career potential.
