    Job Summary

    The Center for Health Statistics, located within the Community Health Division at MDH, is currently seeking a Population Health Survey Director to join our team

    The Population Health Survey Director will plan, design, organize and direct the work of the survey research staff for the Minnesota Center for Health Statistics (MCHS). In this role you will provide guidance and oversite to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Minnesota Student Survey (MSS), the Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS), and other surveys pertaining to the assessment of health status, health risk behaviors, the prevalence of chronic conditions, and receipt of preventive health services among the Minnesota population. Other responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
    • Providing leadership, consultation, and guidance to MDH programs and staff and public health organizations.
    • Collaborating with other scientists and epidemiologists throughout MDH and external partners to conduct studies.
    • Providing expertise to the Minnesota Center for Health Statistics (MCHS) staff in research activities related to design, data collection, statistical analysis and reporting of data with particular focus on evaluation of health disparities.
    • Assisting or taking the lead in grant writing and preparation of research reports for publication, sharing the results with key stakeholders and the public.
    • Representing MDH in public forums, including presentations at research conferences.
    • Providing testimony to legislative or other committees.
    This position is telework eligible for residents of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of a Minnesota Department of Health office location. Position schedule will be based on the business needs of the unit and manager discretion. Commuting to the St. Paul office and other MDH office locations across the state may be required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Four (4) years of experience designing, planning, organizing, implementing, directing, or evaluating data-related projects including needs assessments, program evaluation, and research studies using primary or secondary database linkage efforts.

    Experience must also include:
    • Demonstrated leadership such as a supervisory, lead worker, team lead, or project lead experience.
    • Experience working with BRFSS data and implementing BRFSS system data summaries.
    • Experience working with STATA or R.
    Minimum Qualifications to be further assessed during the interview process:
    • Experience with collecting, cleaning, and analyzing survey data.
    • Experience working with large population health surveys.
    • Ability to conceive, organize, and carry out research projects independently.
    • Ability to think strategically.
    • Ability to lead and manage a diverse staff.
    • Experience working with diverse communities and analyzing health data through a health equity lens with the ability to present findings to a diverse audience.
    *Demonstrated leadership experience may include:
    • Experience as a supervisor, lead worker, team lead, project lead;
    • Completion of a State of Minnesota leadership program (e.g. ELI, SLI, L4);
    • Completion of a similar or equivalent leadership development program through another organization
    • A paid or unpaid position leading a program or chairing a committee, such as an Employee Resource Group (ERG). This experience must include 1+ years identifying issues, goals and strategic actions, AND 100+ hour/year time commitment.
    A Bachelor's degree in epidemiology, economics, environmental health, psychology, health statistics or health services research, or closely related field may substitute as one year of experience; a Master's Degree may substitute for 18 months of experience, a PhD may substitute for 2 years of experience .

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Advanced degree in epidemiology, economics, environmental health, psychology, health statistics or health services research, or closely related field .
    • Experience with multi-year databases.
    • Experience with the CDC grant application process.
