Description
The Polysom Trainee RRT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) provides safe, reliable, diagnostic sleep testing and effective respiratory care as an advanced practitioner for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, in accordance to discipline training level, Clinical Practice Guidelines, hospital standards, guidelines and protocols, as well as to serve as a respiratory care and sleep medicine technical resource and educator for patients, caregivers, hospital staff and students.
If applicable, The Polysom Trainee RRT is RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) credentialed, and licensed in the state of Virginia as a polysomnographic technologist or respiratory therapist, can function as a shift team leader in the absence of the supervisor.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist
Current registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)
Current AHA BLS Certification
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current license as a Respiratory Therapist by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Current registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)
Current RPSGT, SDS, or RST (to be obtained within 18 months of hire)
Current CPR certification as required by practice setting
Experience REQUIRED:
Two (2) years of clinical experience functioning as a respiratory therapist.
Experience PREFERRED:
Three (3) years of experience functioning as a diagnostic respiratory therapist.
Two (2) years of experience in pediatrics
Experience that has satisfied the eligibility requirements for the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT)
Academic healthcare experience
Education/training REQUIRED:
Education, training and/or experience that has satisfied the eligibility requirements for the National Board for Respiratory Care (or its predecessor organizations)
Education/training PREFERRED:
Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program
Current related credentials from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) or National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB), Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)
Current ACLS and/or PALS
Training and competency in RRT, SDS, or RST functions for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
Independent action(s) required:
Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of sleep medicine and respiratory care in the Commonwealth of
Virginia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and VCU Health policies and procedures and established practice guidelines.
All entry-level trainees must identify themselves to patients as a student or trainee in polysomnographic technology in accordance with
Virginia state law.
Assists with the completion all independent actions listed for the Licensed & Credentialed - RRT, RPSGT Sleep Respiratory Therapist, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) credentialed sleep technologist or Sleep Respiratory Therapist as training and competency permit.
Performs RRT and RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) job functions on inpatient floors and critical care environments under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT or RRT/RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) credentialed sleep technologist as training and competency permit.
Appropriately modify ventilator settings (pressure, rate, iTime, sensitivity, trach cuff ) according to established policies, guidelines, protocols and provider orders under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT or RRT/RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), credentialed sleep technologist as training and competency permit.
Provide appropriate tracheostomy care and maintenance as required under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT or RRT/RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) credentialed sleep technologist as training and competency permit.
Collect CBG blood gas readings under the direct oversight and training of a licensed, RPSGT or RRT/RPSGT, Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) credentialed sleep technologist as training and competency permit.
