    Pay Range

    $ $59.49 Hourly
    $ $49.65 Hourly for the 562.2 level
    $ $59.49 Hourly for the 562.3 level

    Job Description

    We are seeking a Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation Technologist/Senior Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation Technologist to provide general technical support of transportation, shipping/receiving, processing, packaging, storage and accounting of hazardous/controlled materials to programs at LLNL's Site 200 located in Livermore, California. You will perform tasks related to the control and accountability of controlled materials, maintain records, and keep portable measurement equipment and instruments in good operating condition. This position is in the Vaults and Transportation Group within the Packaging and Transportation Functional Area (PTFA)/Packaging and Transportation Safety (PATS) Program within the Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

    This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

    You will

    • Transport/transfer, receive, process, package, and ship hazardous/controlled materials on and off-site according to applicable Federal/State regulations and DOE/LLNL procedures.
    • Participate in the On Call program as required by Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for emergency response activities and off-site operations.
    • Maintain the storage, inventory, and accurate records of controlled materials.
    • Perform a variety of Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) and nuclear material measurements, including the operation of measurement equipment, analysis general data and results, and certifications of materials.
    • Operate commercial vehicles requiring a Class C Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials Endorsement.
    • Perform duties as a Radiation Worker and HAZMAT employee such as packaging and transporting controlled materials, taking dose measurements, and maintaining proper contamination control while working with radioactive materials, and packaging, preparing, and making shipments of regulated hazardous materials.
    • Under general supervision begin performing shipping operations for personnel and organizations outside of the immediate work unit and resolve programmatic requirements, material control issues, ES&H deficiencies, and general technical problems.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Additional job responsibilities, at the 562.3 level

    • Under minimal supervision, interpret and execute requirements of DOT regulations or Work Control Documents. Generate large volume of detailed documentation. Assist in writing procedures and reports.
    • Provide advanced technical support of transportation, shipping/receiving, processing, packaging, storage, accounting and coordination of hazardous/controlled materials/wastes.
    • Mentor less qualified employees.
    Qualifications
    • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
    • Associate's Degree in hazardous materials management and waste technologist, radiation protection, chemistry, materials science, or environmental science or technology, or A.A. Degree that contains significant science and math coursework, or a Certification in Hazardous Materials, Radiation Protec tin or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Basic to intermediate experience transporting, transferring, receiving, processing, packaging, and shipping hazardous/controlled materials on- and off-site according to applicable Federal/State regulations and DOE/organizational procedures.
    • Experience with and knowledge of hazardous/controlled materials.
    • Experience with personal computers, spreadsheet software, and word processing software necessary to maintain storage, inventory, and accurate records of hazardous/controlled materials/waste.
    • Ability to maintain records and record-keeping systems and be responsible for ensuring equipment and instruments in good operating condition and report material control and ES&H deficiencies.
    • Ability to obtain explosives handler, radiation worker, and/or HAZMAT certifications as well as qualify for certification on various nondestructive assay equipment; e.g. gamma isotopic measurement devices.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain Class C Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials Endorsement.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills at the technical level.

    Additional qualifications at the 562.3 level

    • Ability to regularly and independently interact with co-workers, scientists, engineers, and skilled technical personnel with follow up both inside and outside of work group.
    • Advanced knowledge of ES&H requirements, MC&A procedures, standards and techniques and DOE/DOT/ NRC regulations.
    • Advanced experience as an explosive's handler, radiation worker, and/or HAZMAT certified technician.

    Qualifications We Desire

    • DOT HAZMAT certification.
    • IATA certification.
    • Experience shipping radioactive and/or explosive materials.

    Security Clearance

    This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
