    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

    The work involves planning, coordinating and conducting an education and in-service training program for behavioral health nursing at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC).

    This is a professional nursing position responsible for conducting training, scheduling training opportunities, evaluating learner performance, and developing or amending training content for the applicable subject areas.

    Upon possession of the appropriate instructor certifications, the incumbent will also plan, coordinate and conduct education and in-service training for basic life support (BLS) and New York State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified safety program.

    Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice President of Behavioral Health Nursing and Education with leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in performing the details of the work.

    Supervision is exercised over lower-level professional and non-professional nursing staff. Supervision is also exercised over those staff receiving instruction. Does related work as required.


    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
    Conducts and coordinates in-service training and education for behavioral health nursing and, upon instructor certification, BLS and Therapeutic Relationships and Universal Safety Training (TRUST);

    Schedules training/educational sessions and evaluates those receiving instruction on the applicable subject matters; maintains appropriate records;


    Reviews course content and develops or revises content based on applicable laws, rules, regulations, accreditation standards, program evaluations, industry trends, etc.

    ;

    Assists in developing and amending educational and specific nursing unit/functional policies and procedures;

    Participates in new employee orientation;

    Assists with performance evaluations involving staff in specialty unit and progressive discipline of employees;

    Serves as clinical resource person, patient advocate and clinical role model; serves as a liaison with external entities associated with the training/educational process;

    Develops and provides alternate and corrective methods for providing content as needed;

    Monitors nursing activities using quality assurance standards;

    Provides for growth and development of all nursing staff assigned to specialty area;

    Participates in budgetary planning;

    Teaches in the actual nursing and bedside situation by demonstrations, trial practices constructive feedback and follow-up to ensure satisfactory level of knowledge for nursing employees;

    Participates in and may schedule various meetings, trainings, conferences, in-services, etc.

    FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:


    Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, equipment and terminology as applicable to the nursing practice in general and as it relates to behavioral health care; thorough knowledge of principles, practices and terminology associated with training and providing education for behavioral health nursing; thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, accreditation standards, and ECMCC policies and procedures; ability to schedule, conduct and evaluate in-service training and educational programs; ability to develop training and educational content specific to behavioral health nursing; ability to develop alternate training and educational content based on individual learner needs; ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of lower-level staff; ability to evaluate the nursing practice as administered at ECMCC; ability to work independently; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


    Possession of a Bachelor's Degree* in Nursing and two (2) years of professional nursing experience, of which one (1) year was in behavioral health nursing.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;

    Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an approved ECMCC provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of employment;

    Completion of New York State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified safety program within three (3) months of appointment and participation in annual re-training;

    Possession of BLS Instructor Certification from an approved ECMCC provider within one (1) year of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;

    Successful completion of Train-the-Trainer Program of New York State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified Train the Trainer safety program within one (1) year of appointment;

    Possession of Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC) in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing as issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) within one (1) year of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;


    Section 424-a of the Social Services Law requires the local social services district to inquire whether the applicant is the subject of an indicated child abuse or maltreatment report on file with the State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment.
