About the Position:

This job opportunity is open to all qualified U.S. citizens. As a Chemist at the Geology, Energy & Minerals Science Center, you will have a variety of responsibilities including:

Perform analytical tests for water quality parameters, physical measurements, and ions via ion chromatography.
Analyze major, minor, and trace elements using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry.
Develop new analytical methods for inorganic analysis and handle data problems.
Contribute to the USGS Quality Management System by writing procedures and reports.
Assist with sample collection, processing, and interpretation tasks.
Participate in geologic fieldwork and operate a government vehicle when needed.

Physical Demands:

The job is primarily done indoors but may involve outdoor work with walking, climbing, and heavy lifting.

Work Environment:

Work is mainly in an office or lab setting, but fieldwork exposes you to various weather conditions and wildlife.

Requirements:

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
Selectee must have a valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
Pre-employment medical examination is mandatory.

Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the basic education requirement which includes 30 semester hours in chemistry. For GS-11 level, 3 years of higher-level graduate education in chemistry or equivalent professional experience is required.

Education:

Experience includes paid and unpaid work in relevant fields. Volunteer work is also considered.
