MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR
This is a full time, benefited position. It is for 186 days of the calendar year during the school days. The position will close when filled. The start date is August 15, 2024.
JOB SUMMARY
Applicant's primary responsibility is to provide comprehensive school-based mental health services to schools.
Respond to referrals from school teams (administrators, counselors, and teachers) as well as parents and others by providing direct services and by assisting families in accessing appropriate community resources.
Reports to the Executive Director of Student Services.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Review student records to identify previous barriers and/or interventions
Assist schools in following local school board regulations for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention
Provide individual and/or group counseling
Conduct outreach to students, families, school staff, and the broader community regarding services provided and student mental health needs
Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refer parents and students to agencies when appropriate
Coordinate services and activities with principals and other counselors
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and skills for direct and indirect intervention including: counseling on an individual, group, or family basis; consulting with administrators, teachers, parents, and other professionals about student problems and appropriate change strategies; and networking with school programs and community agencies to provide essential services for families and children; ethical issues, professional issues and standards; foundations of school psychology; and the role and function of school based mental health, social and environmental conditioning, cultural diversity and family systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college/university in Social Work, School
Psychologist, School Counselor, or a related field.
Experience working in school-based mental health, adolescent health and with school
systems.
Experience working effectively with teams related to mental health.
Ability to work well independently, and within a team environment.
Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
