    The Department of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for a one-year full-time non-tenure track Clinical Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in Black community and the history of science and medicine, community health and wellness disparities, and public health policy to begin August 2024.

    The successful candidate should have expertise in 20th and 21st century African American political and social issues in relationship to the specialties mentioned.

    The department is particularly interested in candidates with innovative applied projects or research designs that interrogate the relationship between race and other relevant social indicators.


    LMU values the teacher-scholar model; therefore, successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to incorporate their research within a variety of upper and lower-division courses in African American Studies, such as Race and Contemporary Society and selected topics in African American Studies constructed around the candidate's expertise.

    The department values community engagement, diversity, social justice, and inclusive pedagogy in fostering academic excellence.


    The teaching load for clinical instructors is three (3) courses per semester, with an expectation to mentor students of diverse populations on their academic and professional aspirations, and to engage in department, college, and university service as needed.

    Applicants should demonstrate the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary unit.


    Qualifications:

    • MPH or ABD, or Ph.
    D. in Public Health or M.A., ABD, or Ph.
    D.

    in African American Studies with a specialization in community-based and/or public health research including research design and methods and/or history in science and medicine.

    The department will consider applicants with backgrounds in other appropriate social science fields whose work centers the black experience, including but not limited to Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, and Anthropology.

    A master's degree is required by the time of appointment.

    • Success in teaching the African American experience
    • Record of scholarly achievement within their discipline in relationship to African and/or Ethnic Studies
    • Ability to incorporate LMU's mission in teaching, scholarship, and service to the university
