- The physical agility test and written test will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Keystone Oaks High School, 1000 Kelton Ave, Pittsburgh, PA There are no exceptions.
- Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for the position of police officer, as set forth below, will be sent information for the physical agility test and written test via email, upon submission of their application. The information includes a Physician's Certification form that must be completed by a health care provider in order to participate in the March 21, 2026 physical agility test.
NATURE OF WORK
- Under supervision of a Field Training Officer, Senior Police Officer or Police Supervisor the Police Officer enforces law, maintains order, and protects life and property.
- The work involves learning Departmental Policy and Procedure, State and Local Laws, Court Rules and Procedures, Basic Investigation and Reporting, Law Enforcement Methods and Theory.
- There is a 12-month probationary period from employment start date (or for Police Academy cadets, from graduation date from the Allegheny County Police Academy).
EXAMPLE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Handles police incidents, emergency situations, traffic accidents, traffic enforcement duties and other related activities.
- Perform general patrol duties, responds to emergencies and conducts traffic stops.
- Drive emergency vehicles, including under stressful conditions.
- Intervene in and control human conflicts.
- Develop and maintain positive community and interpersonal relations.
- Ability to work in stressful conditions involving emergencies and dangerous circumstances.
- Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.
- Ability to demonstrate a high standard of ethics and integrity.
- Ability to communicate well, express ideas, and explain information effectively.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form. Understands and carries out oral and written instructions.
- Exercise independent judgment in determining reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause to search and arrest, and when to use force and the degree of force.
- Successfully qualify in the use of firearms and weapons approved for use by the Department.
- Work shifts as assigned.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a United States citizen, per Pennsylvania Act 120.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Possess a Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university upon hire. Prior Police work or prior military background without a bachelor's degree will not be considered.
- Must be age 21+ upon hire.
- Must pass physical, written, and oral exams plus a comprehensive background investigation.
- If hired, must reside within 25 air miles of the Mt. Lebanon Public Safety Building (555 Washington Rd , within 12 months of start of employment.

PAY AND BENEFITS INCLUDE:
- 2026 starting salary of $82,264, with step increases. Eligible for overtime.
- Starting salary for successful applicants entering the Allegheny County Police Academy: $64,688 (Cadets are not eligible for overtime while training at the Police Academy).
- Lateral applicants: 2026 starting salary of $93,990 for certified officers with 3 or more years experience with another department.

SELECTION PROCESS
- Physical Agility Examination: All events are "Pass/Fail". For more detailed information regarding the physical agility examination, please visit the following link:
- Written Examination: Passing score will be eighty percent (80%). The Written Examination Score will constitute fifty percent (50%) of the Applicant's final score on the Eligibility for Appointment List.
- Oral Examination: The top 25 Applicants who pass the Physical Agility Test and Written Examination with a score of at least 80% will be offered an Oral Examination per civil service rules. The Applicant will be required to demonstrate to the Oral Board a facility for speech to enable communication with individuals of disparate age groups and in varied situations. Passing score for the Oral Examination will be seventy-five percent (75%). The Oral Examination Score will constitute fifty percent (50%) of the Applicant's final score on the Eligibility for Appointment List. Applicants invited to the Oral Examination will be required to submit separation or discharge papers prior to admission to the Oral Examination if requesting Veteran's credit. Applicants must also show proof of United States Citizenship as required by Federal Law.
- Background Investigation: The Background Investigation shall be based upon information contained in a Personal History Questionnaire and other information that may be developed during the course of the Investigation. The background will include, but is not limited to, interviews with family, associates, school officials, and employers. It may continue into the Probationary period if the Applicant is hired.
- Pre-Employment Interview: Selected Applicants will be interviewed by the Chief of Police prior to recommendations for appointment.
- Conditional Offer of Employment: Selected Applicants will then receive a conditional offer of employment. Successful completion of the medical and psychological examinations is required for probationary appointment,
- Psychological and Medical Examinations: Selected Applicants will be required to submit to each. A complete psychological and medical examination, including a drug and alcohol blood screen, is mandatory prior to appointment. If the Applicant takes exception to the medical findings, a re-examination at the Applicant's expense is provided for in the Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania Civil Service Rules & Regulations.
- Offer of Employment: Applicants that pass the Psychological and Medical Examinations will either be offered employment as a Recruit (must attend MPOETC Academy) or Probationary Police Officer.
