    Director of Special Education and Special Services

    Summary of Duties

    The Director of Special Education and Special Services for the school district is responsible and accountable for all special education, 504 and multilingual (ELL) programming.

    This position provides vision, leadership, direction, and coordination for these services.

    The Director works closely with principals and staff members, promoting continuous improvement and compliance efforts to achieve the district's mission.

    The Director will ensure program integration with the other instructional departments in the district, Clinton County RESA, and the Michigan Department of Education, including responsibility for compliance with State and Federal rules and regulations.

    Valid administrator certificate
    An approval for director or supervisor of special education through the Office of Special Education from the Michigan Department of Education
    Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with at least one endorsement in Special Education
    Experience
    Minimum 3 years teaching experience in Special Education
    Proven leadership in initiating and implementing change in areas of special education
    Responsible for all special education programming and compliance issues as well as all district 504s, at risk section 31A, and Bi-Lingual programs
    Experience with Inclusion, Autism, Teaming and Differentiated instruction
    Evidence of active participation and leadership in professional learning activities and at professional conferences
    Experience in School Improvement Process and State accountability reporting
    Knowledge of State and Federal special education programs
    High level of interpersonal and leadership skills
    Responsibilities
    Coordinates, develops, and implements special education, 504, and multilingual programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with federal and state laws, as well as district guidelines
    Works with building principals in the coordination and implementation of special education programming, staffing, and classrooms
    Oversees the creation and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities
    Collaborates with parents, guardians, local agencies, and the community to address the unique needs of students with disabilities
    Ensures that the school district is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, such as IDEA, MARSE, and ADA
    Oversees proper documentation and collection of appropriate special education records
    Promotes a school environment that will enable learning to occur in a meaningful manner in a climate of high expectations for self, students, staff and parents
    Coordinates pupil accounting to accurately account for Special Education memberships, Medicaid billing, and associated costs
    Oversees creation of and implementation of 105c agreements between LEA's
    Coordinates and oversees referral, evaluation, and placement of students receiving special services
    Coordinates the professional learning of staff assigned to special services
    Acts as a liaison between the Michigan Department of Education, CCRESA, and the District
    Mediates special education issues with parents, and staff, and advocates for the rights and needs of students with disabilities within the district
    Provides leadership in developing and sharing current knowledge and innovative trends in special education and student services
    Coordinates and supervises the provision of Homebound/Hospitalized services
    Provides input and collaborates with building principals on special education teacher evaluations regarding case management, compliance, IEP writing, and documentation
    Reviews individual IEPs to ensure they align with the student's identified needs and comply with district and legal guidelines, and attends meetings when extra deemed appropriate
    Supports building principals in the hiring and/or placement of special education personnel
    Develops, monitors, and oversees the special education budget and budget reporting in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent for Finance.
    Oversees the multilingual provision of services and teacher
    Serves as the direct report for the District Wellness Coordinator
    Serves as the 504 District Coordinator
    Serves as Co-District Title IX and Harassment Coordinator
    Compensation
    $95,000 – $114,000
