    Default job background
    Description

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading environmental health research and advocacy organization, seeks a Foundations Manager and Grant Writer for its Washington, D.C., office.

Since 1993, EWG has shined a spotlight on outdated legislation, harmful agricultural practices and industry loopholes that pose a risk to our health and the health of our environment.

Whether it's on Capitol Hill or in communities across America, we make our voices heard, changing the debate over environmental health and putting the most important people – you and your family – at the center of the conversation.

EWG is seeking a motivated and detail oriented Foundations Manager and Grant Writer to join our Development team. This team is responsible for securing philanthropic revenue and growing and cultivating EWG's diverse funder base. As a Foundations Manager and Grant writer, you will be responsible for creating compelling and persuasive grant proposals, reports and development materials for various donor audiences, including private foundations and major funders, that inspire action toward our mission of protecting health and the environment. We are seeking a natural storyteller who can supplement creativity with data-driven research.

    What you will do:

    • Translate complex issues in environmental science, health, and policy into concise and compelling fundraising and outreach materials, proposals and reports
    • Research grant opportunities from private foundations
    • Draft grant proposals and other supporting documents based on the requirements of the EWG and the prospective funder
    • Lead and coordinate internal review process
    • Work cross-functionally with EWG program staff to maximize funding opportunities
    • Submit proposals to foundations as required by funders
    • Respond to internal and external queries on drafted and submitted proposals
    • Cultivate relationships with program officers and other funder contacts to build interest in EWG's programs
    • Maintain accurate records for foundation funders and prospects and manage application and reporting deadlines
    • Maintain funding calendar activities, including cultivation and reporting activities.
    • In collaboration with program staff, develop and implement project management procedures to track grant implementation and ensure grant compliance
    • Submit reports related to funded grants
    • Participate in fundraising activities, staff, and department meetings
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of three years of experience working in Foundation fundraising and writing grant proposals or fundraising materials
    • Excellent written communication skills
    • Strong research skills and ability to compellingly convey the mission and programs of EWG
    • Experience collaborating with a highly-skilled, mission-driven, diverse staff
    • Ability to troubleshoot and work under pressure, often to tight deadlines
    • Commitment to handling confidential matters with utmost integrity
    • Creative problem-solver comfortable working with autonomy to keep projects moving forward
    • Bachelor degree preferred

    Preferred qualifications:

Experience in an environmental or health focused nonprofit is a plus.

Experience in scientific or technical writing

Location: Washington, D.C., office hybrid or remote

Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. EWG offers fully paid, excellent health care, paid parental leave and a tax-deferred 403(b) plan, including matched contributions. It's a casual, growing office with more than 40 engaging co-workers.

EWG's commitment to diversity and inclusion:

EWG celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We are proud to foster a work environment that supports, inspires and respects all individuals. EWG does not discriminate against any employee or applicant on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, citizenship, ancestry, marital status, family responsibilities, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, medical condition, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, matriculation or political affiliation, or any other protected class recognized in any of the jurisdictions where EWG has offices or employees working.
