    Job Description:

    The Pre-Admission Testing Nurse is responsible for contacting incoming patients to obtain and review their health history prior to surgery. This includes analyzing and assessing clinical data related to the patient's anesthesia risk, as well as working closely with the anesthesia department to coordinate the patient's needs.

    Functional Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Analyze and assess clinical data related to a patient's anesthesia risk.

    • Contact incoming patients to obtain and review their health history prior to surgery.

    • Work closely with the anesthesia department to coordinate a patient's needs.

    • Perform accurate and complete assessments of patients prior to admission, including physical and psychological needs.

    • Communicate information to appropriate team members and initiate a patient care plan.

    • Ensure pre-operative care requirements are accomplished through the use of the nursing process.

    • Provide individualized preoperative education to patients and identify areas of knowledge deficit.

    • Alert the anesthesia department of results from labs, physical assessments, and special needs of patients prior to surgery.

    • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as an effective member of a healthcare team to expedite patient preadmission activities and the admission process.

    • Possess adequate understanding of operative procedures, required patient preparations, and expected post-operative course.

    • Be knowledgeable in surgical procedures, medications, and anesthesia techniques to answer patient questions and provide pre-operative instructions.

    • Identify and document abnormal assessment results and discharge planning challenges in patients and report this information to the healthcare team.

    • Initiate and complete all necessary forms, both electronic and paper-based.

    • Participate in weekly huddles to provide testing updates or information important for upcoming cases.

    • Ensure completion of preadmission records by reviewing physicians' orders, informed consent, preadmission testing, and history and physical.

    • Participate in quality assessment and improvement plans for the department as directed by the Director and/or Manager.

    • Maintain competency through licensure requirements, core competencies, and attending relevant programs.

    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patients served.

    • Attend and participate in hospital/department meetings as required.

    • Comply with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations, and standards related to the job.

    Position Requirements:

    • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

      • 2 years of relevant clinical practice experience (preferably critical care experience or PACU experience).

    • Education:

      • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

      • Current state license.

      • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
