Director of Operations – Children's Museum of Rock County
The Children's Museum of Rock County (CMRC) in Janesville, Wisconsin, is seeking an inspiring Director of Operations to build and lead the systems that make every visit unforgettable for children and families. In this full-time, exempt role, you will partner closely with the Executive Director as a key thought leader and operational strategist, shaping the museum's next chapter of growth, innovation, and community impact.
Position Overview
The Director of Operations ensures smooth, efficient operation of the Children's Museum of Rock County, fostering an engaging, safe, and welcoming environment for all visitors, members, and staff. This leadership role oversees daily facility operations, visitor services, and the museum's membership program, while coordinating closely with other managers to drive organizational success, fiscal responsibility, and an exceptional guest experience.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
· Oversee daily museum operations, including facility management, safety, and front-line staff coordination.
· Collaborate with staff to develop and implement operational policies and procedures that promote efficiency, compliance, and high-quality visitor experiences.
· Lead risk management efforts, including emergency preparedness, staff training, and adherence to safety protocols.
· Manage vendor relationships, equipment maintenance, and service contracts.
· Collaborate with the Executive Director to support budget planning and operational forecasting.
Visitor Services & Guest Experience
· Supervise all visitor services functions, including admissions, retail, and front desk operations.
· Train and mentor Visitor Services staff and volunteers to deliver exceptional customer service.
· Oversee daily cash handling, point-of-sale systems, and financial reporting procedures.
· Monitor visitor feedback and attendance data to inform improvements in service delivery and operational flow.
Membership Oversight
· Manage all aspects of the museum's membership program, including recruitment, renewal, retention, and engagement.
· Collaborate with the Marketing & Development team to grow membership and enhance member value through benefits, communications, and events.
· Track membership trends, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports for leadership review.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
· Supervise and evaluate department managers and frontline staff in operations and guest services roles.
· Foster a positive, team-oriented culture aligned with the museum's mission and values.
· Partner with managers of education, exhibits, and development on cross-departmental initiatives that enhance the overall visitor experience.
Strategic Planning
· Oversee the identification and evaluation of opportunities to improve museum effectiveness based on participation and achievement of stated goals; recommend modifications to improve program and operational performance, as appropriate.
Resource Management
· Assist with budget development; monitor and report variances in revenues and expenditures.
· Manage performance of assigned staff in achieving goals, providing technical assistance in program design, development, community relations and museum operations.
· Plan and implement a staff development and training program.
Partnership Development
· Develop collaborative partnerships with other youth-serving organizations, members, parents, families and community organizations.
· Support Board Committees, as assigned.
Marketing and Public Relations
· Participate in activities to maintain good public relations for museum programs, services and activities.
· Increase visibility of museum development activities and maintain good public relations.
· Assist in planning and hosting special events, including obtaining sponsorships and solicitation of gifts and preparing related printed materials and publications.
Additional Responsibilities
· Assist staff with human resources programs and systems, including recruitment, employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development.
· All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in business, nonprofit management, hospitality, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
· 5+ years of leadership experience in operations, facility management, or visitor services, ideally in a museum or nonprofit setting.
· Demonstrated ability to manage staff, budgets, and complex logistical systems.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on customer service and team development.
· Proficiency with office software, POS systems, and CRM/membership databases.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends, evenings, and special events.
