- Functions as primary scrub person responsible for handling of instruments, supplies and equipment during endoscopy procedures scheduled in the facility.
- Using strict sterile technique, establishes sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, LASERS, arthroscopy equipment, urology equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment.
- Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical team and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
- Plans and discusses each endoscopy procedure with endoscopy team and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the endoscopy procedure.
- Prepares endoscopy supplies, equipment, scopes, specimen collection containers and more based on scheduled procedure. Is quickly adaptable to unexpected instrument/ supply requests made by endoscopist during the procedure.
- Reviews surgery schedule for subsequent day, selects appropriate preference card(s), and prepares case cart(s) for each Veteran's care. Pulls surgical supplies and instrumentation. Carefully and thoroughly reviews preference card and collaborates with surgical team, Sterile Processing staff, provider, etc. to immediately address gaps in supplies, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Prepares, organizes, and maintains sterile surgical setups of varying complexity. Ensures sterile field is continuously monitored.
- Reviews surgery schedule in advance (at least 5 business days) and assesses upcoming case needs for service lines.
- Assists surgical team to maintain current, relevant preference cards for all procedures.
- Provides guidance and support to members of surgical team to ensure safe and effective care of the Veteran.
- Supervises volunteers, students, and other personnel, as assigned.
- Provides guidance and support to professional and technical students of an approved surgical technology program.
- Assists in developing and maintaining appropriate and cost-effective inventory practices. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm (24/7 call)

Summary
This position is located within the Nursing Operations service at the Montana VA Health Care System and is responsible for assisting the surgeon and other team members of the surgical team during surgical procedures/procedural care.
Duties
The Health Technician (Surgical Tech) serves as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures per facility's complexity designation, including but not limited to general, GYN, podiatry, ophthalmology, orthopedic, and urology surgeries. Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of who are at stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments, supplies, and equipment for the surgeon. The ST must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique. The ST must have an acute awareness of his/her personal footprint in relation to sterile field maintenance.
