DescriptionJob Summary:
Sells, promotes, and markets natural gas services to prospective natural gas customers in order to maximize sales and revenue for Virginia Natural Gas.
Representative Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sells to prospective customers to promote the benefits of natural gas; promotes multiple burner tips.
- Facilitate new gas service to residential customers within VNG service territory as needed and may include: Southside of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk) or the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, New Kent, Mechanicsville, Toano).
- Obtains customer requests for residential gas projects; gathers information necessary to start sales process for project (e.g., engineering scaled site plans, plat information, customer needs and/or requests); enters and maintains information into database (referred to as ARM database) ensures all information is collected and entered into the database for the next phase (Engineering or Construction Operations).
- Provides daily sales tracking sheet and monthly tracking reports to New Business Services management for compilation into a monthly departmental report.
- Attends sales meetings and participates in bi-weekly conference calls.
- Attends Trade Association and Home Builders Association meetings as needed; builds and maintains working relationships with builders and developers as needed.
- Meets or exceeds territory and/or customer goals.
- Ensure that compliance with all engineering principles, gas operating standards, local code, state and federal rules, regulations, mandates and statutes is maintained by preparing and/or revising designs as necessary for all gas facilities installed.
- Ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction by responding to customer needs, keeping customers informed and ensuring work is scheduled in an effective manner for the mutual benefit of customer and company.
- Promote the use of natural gas by communicating the benefits to the Company's existing and potential clients.
- Coordinate the many activities necessary to bring customers on line, including the frequently conflicting schedules of construction, operations, contractors and municipalities.
- Represent the Company at meetings by communicating Company policy, procedure and other information relative to the gas industry.
- Perform other reasonable essential functions as assigned.
- Perform ARM tasks: Plat redlines, gas load, rough proposal drawings, cost estimating, etc.
- Review and obtain contracts and customer contributions and notify internal contacts.
- Process gas-availability requests.
- Contact/meet with customer as necessary, including discussions regarding VNG's process and timeframes.
Design & Mapping Responsibilities
- Using Mobile GIS and other applications, design and draw proposals, including cost estimating and routing to various VNG departments.
Construction Support Responsibilities
- Permitting, including field data gathering
- Customer interface
- Process construction requests for residential services
- Perform new business tasks: Plat pick-up, main measurements, record compilation (service card pulling, etc.)
- Assist in scheduling residential meter sets
- Coordinate construction with various VNG departments and external contractors
Education and Experience:
Required:
- BA/BS degree; in lieu of degree may substitute 3-5 years experience in the natural gas industry. Experiences should include customer service, understanding gas and construction operations, and rates and regulation.
Preferred:
- 2-3 years sales experience
Or
- Equivalent academic education and experience
Skills:

- Ability to effectively sell, listen, and communicate with customers
- Ability to provide benefits of natural gas appliances over competitive fuel appliances
- Ability to compare and contrast carbon footprint of buildings based upon energy used
- Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Organizational skills
- Negotiation skills
- Computer literacy - intermediate proficiency
- Proficient use of PC and multiple mainframe and software programs, including MS Office, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of city and state building and land regulations
- Extensive knowledge of natural gas distribution system facilities, including the OPM and Construction Manuals
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to read, interpret and apply engineering and architectural plans
Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Perform field work tasks year round
- Safety sensitive
- Travel/Driving to meet with customers (in-town)
- Frequently meet with contractors at construction sites with exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, atmospheric conditions such as dust, dampness, humidity
- Hybrid work environment, in the office/onsite 4 days per week with 1 day remote, but subject to change per business needs
