- Execute and lead distribution strategy, including P&L objectives, product and expansion for the business.
- Provide Executive level authority for risk referrals and underwriting guidance to the team, when called upon.
- Develop strategies and actions to resolve adverse trends or deviations from established underwriting standards identified through producer and account review audits.
- Establish and communicate underwriting profit goals and other measurements including loss ratio, new business development, policy count, account retention, etc.
- Analyze individual risks and book of business results to manage and control underwriting exposure and pricing strategy consistent with company objectives.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships within and outside Argo Group to develop and drive new business opportunities.
- Work with internal and external business units to develop joint business plans, value propositions and cross-marketing programs.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection process to ensure the organization has the necessary talent to accomplish business goals

- Ensure fully aware and informed of the evolving economic and insurance marketplace to ensure understand underwriting trends, legal developments and concerns.

- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and at least 12+ years of years of dedicated Inland Marine underwriting with clear progression of scope and responsibility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven leadership capabilities with a sound influence in dealing with challenging situations.
- Independent decision maker – takes full responsibility for making decisions and consequences associated with decisions.
- Have established relationships with external clients and professional network.
- Demonstrates strong ability to partner with finance, actuarial, IT and marketing resources.
- Experience managing a book of at least $10m
- Experience developing guidelines preferred.
- Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process.
- Adept at risk selection, exposure evaluation and ability to rate, quote and sell admitted and non-admitted solutions for Marine lines of business.
- Excellent organization skills, very strong analytical, oral and written communication skills required. The ability to meet tight deadlines is essential.

- Ability to interact and communicate with various levels of the organization to cross-sell or address processing requirements.

The
VP Underwriting, Inland Marine
will play a key role working with the SVP of Marine helping to coordinate the department's corporate activities associated with growing a profitable book of business with our distribution partners.
This position will involve oversight over multiple functional areas, including brokerage operations as well as regional responsibility over one or more regions.
This is a Field Underwriting, market-facing role, where the Underwriter is expected to be "in the market" with local partners to build relationships and deeply understand local risk dynamics.
The role additionally includes setting local strategy, geographic expansion, managing distribution relationships, and being accountable for underwriting quality and results, working closely with our AVPs and other underwriting staff.
