    Reporting to the Director, Prospect Research in the Philanthropy department, the Associate Director, Prospect Research is responsible for identifying, Reporting to the Director, Prospect Research in the Philanthropy department, the Associate Director, Prospect Research is responsible for identifying, researching, and analyzing prospects for major gift cultivation and solicitation.

    The Associate Director, Prospect Research will develop and implement procedures for prospect identification and serve as a project lead on special research initiatives.


    Job Description:
    Research/Data Collection/Analysis

    • Conduct biographical, business, and financial research on prospects/donors and other high-level individuals, as well as corporations and foundations, using a variety of online databases and other public information as well as internal sources.
    • Analyzes, interprets, and evaluates biographical, business, personal and financial information for current and prospective donors.
    • Evaluate a prospect's financial capacity, ability to give, willingness to give, charitable interests and connection to the organization.
    • Verify, update and record various types of research information in Raiser's Edge database.
    Prepare Confidential Materials

    • Prepare confidential research snapshots, briefings, board candidate bios, and event bios for members of the BILH Philanthropy team and senior leadership team.
    • Proofread/edit materials to ensure information is complete, accurate and presented appropriately.
    Pipeline Development

    • Contribute to the prospect pipeline by analyzing new and existing donors and identifying major gift prospects for gift officer portfolios.
    • Proactively plan and execute strategies to identify sources of major gift support for fundraising initiatives.
    Project Management

    • Regularly serve as a project lead on special research initiatives.
    • Assist with the prioritization of both proactive and reactive research projects for the team.
    • Collaborate with Philanthropy leadership on prospect research priorities and goals.
    • Develop guidelines and procedures for the research team, and assist with improving current processes to ensure the team is being as efficient as possible.
    Other

    • Contribute to success of the research team by assisting with training and serving as a mentor to research staff.
    • Identify opportunities to utilize advanced research techniques and sources to enhance the quality of research data and materials produced.
    • Work with leadership to investigate, plan and implement new products or procedures and best practices.
    • Run queries, exports, and/or reports as needed to extract data/information from Raiser's Edge database.
    • Collaborate with colleagues across all Philanthropy units to achieve department goals.
    • Attend and participate in team meetings, department meetings, organizational meetings, and/or professional webinars, seminars, or conferences as needed. Other duties as assigned.
    Supervision

    • Supervise one staff member, Prospect Research Analyst

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor's Degree required


    Licensure, Certification & Registration: N/A


    Experience:

    • At least 5 years in a fundraising department of a non-profit organization, preferably in Prospect Research, required
    • Experience in internet-based prospect research tools and techniques required Proficiency with Raiser's Edge, Lexis Nexis, Foundation Center, Donor Search, Foundation Search, iWave preferred Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint required

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

    • Must be extremely detail oriented.
    • Exceptional writing and oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate in a highly professional manner.
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to create effective collaborations among various levels of staff and faculty.
    • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work and manage multiple and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
    • Demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically.
    • Ability to interpret/analyze complex financial and legal disclosures and technical documents, including court and tax records, annual reports, SEC filings, and property records.
    Knowledge of current trends within philanthropy and healthcare.

    Knowledge of the Prospect Research industry and industry tools, including internet search tools, databases, wealth screenings, and knowledge of advancement best practices.

    Skill in analyzing and organizing information to identify philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations, and foundations.

    Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop proactive prospecting methodologies to support organization goals; identify prospects (through constituent list segmentation, push technology, electronic database screening, and peer/constituency screening and rating); and understand wealth indicators, including income (estimated or public) and assets.

    Demonstrated skill in formatting data so that it is easy to read and understand. Knowledge of commonly used reporting formats for communicating information relevant to a request.
    Ability to work in a team environment.
    Exceptional skills in organization and presentation.
    Possess the highest ethical standards to handle confidential and sensitive gift and donor information appropriately.
