    The goal of the fellowship is to provide specialized training in aortic and complex/high-risk adult cardiac surgery beyond cardiothoracic surgery residency training. The Aortic Fellow will work at the direction of the Emory Aortic Center Medical Director and function across the Emory St. Joseph's Hospital (primary site) and Emory University Hospital campuses.

    The Aortic Fellow will receive advanced training in and be responsible for the following knowledge areas and skills sets including, but not limited to:

    1. Treatment of aortic disease (aneurysms and dissection) utilizing both open and endovascular techniques;
    2. Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including major thoracic aortic surgery and complex/high risk cardiac surgery;
    3. Serve as surgical first assist on complex aortic procedures under the direction of the Medical Director and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons;
    4. Train other cardiothoracic surgery residents and/or fellows on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic disease;
    5. Interpretation and assessment of diagnostic imaging studies;
    6. Participation in both emergent and elective aortic and adult cardiac procedures;
    7. Independent completion of critical portions of the complex aortic procedures (i.e. key anastomoses, performance of re-operative sternotomy);
    8. Independent completion of basic cardiac and aortic cases at the direction or under the supervision of the Medical Director;
    9. Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the Medical Director to support the mission of the Aortic Center.

    -It is REQUIRED that all candidates possess the following credentials: (1) Completion of an ACGME accredited cardiothoracic residency program (2) ABTS Board Eligibility (3) A current (or eligibility for) a Georgia medical license and DEA license
