    Job Description:


    The Community Health Educator promotes early identification of deaf or hard-of-hearing infants and intervention by contacting physicians and families and providing them with appropriate information and resources.


    This position will-* Assess community needs and available community resources for health education program services; and evaluate community health education program data, practices, and services to determine the need for revision or to develop new programs.


    • Follows up on infants that have not passed a hearing screening to ensure they are receiving timely care.
    • Utilizes the Nebraska Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (NE-EHDI) electronic registration system (ERS) to enter hearing screening results and diagnostic evaluations, as well as access other resources to monitor active cases, conduct follow-up, and reduce the number of loss to follow-up infants.
    • Works closely and communicates regularly with the NE-EHDI Program Community Health Educator Senior and Program Manager regarding contacts with families and physicians to reduce loss to follow-up.


    Additional responsibilities include data and record keeping; educating the community and physicians about identifying deaf or hard of hearing infants as early as possible; assisting physicians and parents with referrals/intervention during the diagnosis of hearing status; reviewing complex diagnostics; and assisting with special projects.


    SCHEDULE:

    Hours of Operation:
    M-F 8-5; Part-time hours available during hours of operation: 15-20 hours a week


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Post high school coursework/training in community health education, biological science, adult/continuing education or related field AND experience in public/community health education activities with responsibility for: developing and evaluating health education programs; determining health needs; preparing educational and informational materials, training aids, and presentations; or conferring with individuals and groups to exchange information pertinent to community health education programs.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Graduate Student in Audiology.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities


    The audiology expertise is essential for conveying appropriate urgency and discussing particularly complex diagnostic situations with physicians and clinic staff such as nurses.

    Need a broad understanding of the issues faced by families with an infant or child who is deaf or hard of hearing.

    Strong communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively with others, knowledge of appropriate community services and support, ability to work with diverse families and provide unbiased information, detail-oriented and ability to maintain client confidentiality.
