    Description


    The Communications & Marketing Director advances the Museum's mission to educate people about California's rich history, its diversity, and its unique influence on the world by promoting awareness of, attendance to, and engagement around the Museum's exhibitions and programs to a variety of audiences.

    Working with a small team for day-to-day activities, this position oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Museum's digital communications, promotional materials, and public relations and advertising activities.

    Responsibilities
    Plan and implement marketing and communications campaigns to drive awareness of and attendance to Museum's exhibitions, education programs, and public events
    Develop and manage the communication and marketing department's budget in alignment with strategic goals
    Develop and implement plans for print and digital advertising and oversee their creative execution
    Build and maintain relationships with local and regional media, including pitching and coordinating media coverage and serving as a spokesperson as needed
    Oversee the creation and targeted distribution of press releases, media advisories, talking points, and fact sheets
    Work with Museum team and project partners in promoting, coordinating coverage of, and managing press-related activities at high-profile Museum events
    Establish calendars, collaborate on content, and oversee Museum social media channels
    Oversee the creation and distribution of monthly e-newsletters and work with all departments to ensure consistent messaging
    Manage marketing and/or communications consultants contracted for specialized projects
    Supervise and support the Digital Communications Specialist/Graphic Designer, effectively delegating work and managing priorities
    Work with all departments to promote a variety of initiatives, oversee the implementation of on-site promotional materials and signage, and ensure the Museum website and external listings are consistently up to date
    Conduct regular data-driven assessments of marketing efforts to determine their effectiveness and to ensure maximum value of expenditures
    Stay informed on current trends in both digital and print marketing and communications
    Other duties as assigned


    Qualifications:
    Five years of progressively responsible related experience
    Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field
    Demonstrated track record of leading successful marketing and communications campaigns
    Experience with content strategy, writing and copy editing for AP Style; social media; public relations; advertising strategy; email marketing and communications
    Experience developing and managing budgets
    Supervisory experience with a record of supporting and developing staff
    Background in marketing/communications for visitor-focused cultural organizations preferred
    Ability to travel locally to offsite media opportunities
    Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster or an approved medical or religious exemption
    Fluency in English required; bilingual English/Spanish a plus

    Position:
    Full-time, salaried exempt position reports to Executive Director. Benefits include paid vacation and holidays, dental and vision insurance, employer-subsidized health plan, and 401(k) savings plan with match. Typical work hours Mon.-Fri.

    9:00 am- 5:30 pm. Must be available to work occasional early morning, late evening, and weekend hours. Eligible for up to 20% remote work after 90 days upon request. Starting salary $75,000 – $90,000 annually.
