    Description
    The Clinical Dietitian serves as the Food and Nutrition Services representative in patient care activities.

    These include but are not limited to assessing patients nutritional status, developing care plans, monitoring the nutritional status of the patients, counseling patients and/ or significant others on special nutritional requirements and consulting with other health care professionals as appropriate, The Clinical Dietitian is also responsible for providing professional guidance and education in nutritional management and diet education to physicians, allied health professionals, dietetic students, and entry-level dietitians.

    The clinical dietitian assists the clinical nutrition manager in matters relating to Quality Improvement, participates on hospital committees, and employee/ staff training.

    The clinical dietitian assists in supporting the highest possible patient satisfaction levels, program effectiveness and achievement of mutual department and hospital goals.

    The Clinical Dietitian reports to the Clinical Nutrition Manager and supervises diet office staff in the absence of the Clinical Nutrition Manager.

    The Clinical Dietitian performs other duties as assigned.


    MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provides medical nutrition therapy by completing nutrition assessments, utilizing standards of care to accurately assess patients and implement care plans to ensure patient dietary needs and customer satisfaction levels are met.
    • Educates medical staff and counsels patients and their families on proper nutrition care.
    • Participates on multidisciplinary teams composed of physicians, nurses, social workers and other allied health team members.
    • Provides advice on clinical related issues at departmental and inter-departmental committees/ meetings
    • Maintains accurate records/ documentation of patient care in the Medical Record.
    • Collaborates and communicates with culinary and clinical departments on established processes, nutrition care, special diets and menu requests.
    • Stays current with most recent nutrition-related trends, research, policy, certifications and standards of practice.
    • Provide support and serves as consultant to other dietitians, interns and health team members regarding diet counseling and nutritional management.
    • Probes potential problems and apprises manager of status on resolution of problems or issues, using appropriate resources when necessary.
    • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local regulations and department/ hospital policies and procedures (e.g. HIPAA/ Privacy act, safety, operations, personnel).
    • Provides community education as needed.
    • Proactively assists in the implementation of patient related programs.
    • Assists in the development of departmental standards of nutritional care.
    • Participates in performance improvement activities to improve department processes.
    • Represents the department and hospital in a professional, ethical manner.
    • Must be sensitive to the needs of the patient and the patient's family, maintains patient confidentiality
    • Must have an enthusiastic attitude that promotes teamwork in striving for and meeting departmental goals and objectives
    • Maintains effective communication with key departmental managers and hospital staff.
    • Demonstrates excellent communication and listening skills.
