    Description

    JOB SUMMARY


    Provides direct and indirect care for Labor and Delivery and Post-Partum mothers and newborns under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

    Performs general nursing duties with adequate supervision. Immediately supervised by a Registered Nurse. Reports to OB Manager. Non-Exempt position.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    Performs duties as a Certified Nurse Assistant, Phlebotomist, and/or EKG Tech within the Scope of Practice. Assist licensed personnel with general tasks and patient care as needed and requested by the RN.

    Assist in transporting patients within the unit and to and from Registration and the Emergency Department. Properly uses selected equipment and monitors patient environment.

    Sets up sterile equipment for delivery.

    Provides basic patient care such as bed baths and modified bed baths, showers and feeding.

    Performs all safety checks during bedside shift report and reviews all documentation with oncoming shift. Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patient, including setting up room.

    Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain, abnormal vital signs, or signs of skin breakdown (decubitus).

    Records/documents urine input & output, weights, and vital signs accurately into the electronic health record.

    Answers call lights promptly, and performs hourly rounding to ensure patient has water, has assistance in going to the restroom, if needed, updates on food, and is at a comfortable temperature (room temperature, sheets/blankets, etc.).

    Ensures bedrails are up and all safety precautions are followed, including bed alarms.


    Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient; answers questions within scope of practice, and finds assistance when additional explanation is needed.

    Maintains a safe and quite environment for the patients and clinical staff.

    Ensures patient charges are entered timely and accurately.

    Discontinue IVs within the scope of practice

    Monitors and discontinues foley catheters and calls for assistance when needed.

    Performs specialty blood draws on patients as needed, including blood gases, blood culture collections, etc. Performs lab draws on patients using 2 patient identifiers before a venipuncture or skin puncture is performed.

    Labels and records all test tubes, logs procedures, and documents time, date, and location accurately and timely within the Electronic Health Record.

    Separates and disposes all sharps in appropriate waste container.

    Maintains inventory of supplies within the unit. Coordinates order with laboratory and unit.

    Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.

    Prioritizes orders and patient care and assists nurses when needed.


    Reviews patient requisitions and records to verify tests are correct with what was drawn, and no tests have been missed or incorrectly drawn or ordered.


    Ensures phlebotomy tray/carts are fully stocked and surrounding areas are maintained, clean and clutter free, including the phlebotomy drawing room, outpatient waiting area, and processing area.

    Able to draw PKUs and prepare documentation for lab to document and mail to Dept of State Health Services. Responsible for outpatient faxes (i.e. verifies all results have been faxed to appropriate location)

    Assists in C-sections with cleaning and transporting instruments within their scope of practice.


    POSITION REQUIREMENTS
    Minimum Education

    Certified Nursing Assistant from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission Required.

    Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification required.

    Certified EKG Technician required.

    Certified Phlebotomy Technician required.

    One year of recent OB experience preferred.

    Current BLS for healthcare professionals required at time of hire.

    Required Skills

    Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

    Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

    Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

    Intermediate computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

    Ability to use standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).


    FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

    Functional Job Requirements:
    Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.
