Job Summary
The Sergeant position is responsible for supervising police and security personnel of the shift. The Police Sergeant directs officers in policing and assists leadership in ensuring a safe campus environment. This position assigns duties to subordinates, directs, monitors, and evaluates the work of shift officers. The Police Sergeant conducts patrols, assists in investigations, and reviews reports.

Coordination of CLERY Act Compliance
Reviews, approves, and corrects daily reports
Disseminates information to officers and staff
Identifies and facilitates training for officers
Attends meetings and training
Stay up-to-date with current training trends and case law
Conducts quarter master duties and assign equipment and uniforms to all police department personnel
Acts as the evidence custodian ensuring the university police department is in compliance with state law
Assumes duties as acting division supervisor and or operational management in the absence of senior leadership
Speaks at student organization and orientation workshops
Assists with criminal investigations and executes search & arrest warrants
Assist in Managing 911 operations and manages communications officers ensuring the university police department is in GCIC compliance
Oversee university camera system and provide support for judicial and investigative purposes
Serve as the police department liaison for training by coordinating firearms training; provides legal updates regarding use of force
Responds to any and all emergency situations
Performs administrative duties to include but not limited to employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, roll call and monthly reports
Responds to complaints, provides direction to the officers on scene, and evaluate decisions
Must be available for recall in emergency situations
Ensure a safe environment for the entire Savannah State community
Supervises personnel on assigned shift to assure adherence to Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Arrests violators as necessary
Assigns duties to subordinates
Performs regular inspections including:
full vehicle inspections specifically ensuring all equipment is in working order, cleaning, and properly securing all equipment is accounted for and in its proper place
Communicates information from senior officers
Responds to calls for assistance from officers
May be required to perform job related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
At least 5 years of law enforcement experience
Georgia POST certification or the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire
Excellent customer service skills
High professional standards
Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
Valid Driver's license in good standing
Proposed Salary
The proposed salary range is $45, $50,000.00 annually.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, Savannah State University policies and procedures and Department policies and procedures
Knowledge of principles and modern methods of law enforcement administration including organization, fiscal management, budgetary preparation and controls, program planning, implementation, and administration
Knowledge of principles of employee supervision and personnel management including training, developing, mentoring, and disciplining of personnel
Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures
Knowledge of the University buildings and area
Knowledge of first-aid and CPR techniques
Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures
Skilled in operating police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, and other standard and specialized law enforcement equipment
Skilled in interrogation and interviewing techniques
Skilled in restraining persons without causing physical harm
Skilled in using computers for word processing
Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer¿s Standards and Training Act
Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action based on surrounding hazards and circumstances
Ability to carry duty belt, other weapons, and evidence equipment and sometimes lifting and/or carrying of tires and debris, or of individuals in a rescue effort
Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others
Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.
