    Supervisor Nursing Services - 2 North - Ortho/Surgical - Lutheran

    Shift: Varies, primarily Days

    2 North is a 30 bed medical-surgical unit that provides acute care services to inpatients and observation patients. The unit specializes in Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology, and Abdominal Surgery. 2 North also can care for patients requiring remote telemetry. Our patient population includes pediatric, adolescent, adult and aging adult. This role assists in managing the day to day operations of the unit utilizing quality, cost effective patient care principles. Supervises, supports and develops unit staff. Consistently utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area).

    Responsibilities:
    • Integrates the UnityPoint Health Des Moines Nursing Expectations of Performance in all aspects of care delivery and professional practice.
    • Manages daily operations of patient care. Contributes to the maintenance of high quality, cost effective services consistent with the needs of the users and the hospitals budgetary guidelines.
    • Provides clinical leadership by directing, coordinating and delegating patient care in an organized manner, allowing for flexibility.
    • Acts as an interdepartmental liaison promoting effective multidisciplinary team work.
    • Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
    • Remains competent and available to participate in patient care pertinent to clinical specialty.
    • Demonstrates personal and professional growth and promotes the same among team members.
    • Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.
    • Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations affecting patient care. Remains current on law/regulation changes, recognizes implications to the organization and recommends courses of action to ensure compliance.
    • Assists in the development of policy/procedure and guidelines for safe, efficient operation of the department as needed.
    • Assists in developing annual budget and takes appropriate action when appropriate to maintain control of department financial resources.
    • Implements evidence based practice strategies to meet the patient care needs. Assists in the achievement of quality improvement objectives and takes necessary modifications for attainment of goals.
    • Interviews, orients, trains, schedules, evaluates, disciplines, and terminates staff with appropriate input. Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.
    • Represents UPHDM in a professional manner. Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel.
    Qualifications:

    Minimum Requirements

    Education:

    Bachelors degree.

    BSN

    Experience:

    One year experience as a registered nurse.

    Experience in specialty area.

    License(s)/Certification(s):

    Current Iowa license as a registered nurse.

    Current BLS

    Valid drivers license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional educational and lifestyle backgrounds.

    Knowledge of basic computer skills.

    Other:

    Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
