    Job Description

    Definition / General Purpose:

    To act as overseer/caretaker of the City Cemetery and to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and construction work on the cemetery grounds.


    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

    Works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent.

    Safety classes, employee updates, description summaries, weekly reports, and cemetery records.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Performs a variety of cemetery caretaking duties; mowing grass utilizing lawn mowing equipment, trimming, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, planting, raising and lowing of flags, opening the cemetery daily, and other routine or special projects.

    Marks internment sites, disinterment sites, headstone placements, footstone placements, and all other relevant location services.

    Completes daily duties, overseeing work progress, inspecting work, keeping inventory of tools and equipment and training personnel on using light equipment and proper procedures.

    The employee must be able to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

    Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.

    Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may complain about services provided.

    Must be able to follow directions.

    Willing to work on call as needed and on a 24-hours basis.

    Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.


    PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

    Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned.

    Other Duties as assigned.


    DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or GED equivalent;

    One (1) to three (3) months of related experience caring for a cemetery or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Ability to operate a small backhoe, tractors, riding, and hand mowers.

    Good writing and record-keeping skills.

    Ability to communicate with the public.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Valid state driver's license or ability to obtain one.

    After-hours work is sometimes required as assigned and primarily related to special events.

    Be a self-starter and show initiative.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of basic landscaping techniques;

    Ability to follow routine instructions;

    Ability to work without supervision and complete tasks promptly;

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos;

    Ability to write simple correspondence;

    Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization;

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;

    Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs;

    Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments;

    Ability to utilize current Parks and Recreation equipment, power tools, and other vehicles and/or items effectively and safely, as needed to maintain the appearance of the City Parks and Recreation areas.


    Selection Guidelines:

    Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check; drug test; job-related tests may be required.


    Tools and Equipment Used:

    Pickup truck, gators; lawn/turf and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, acidifiers/aeration equipment, chain saws, edger's, backflows, weed trimmers, trailers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for lawn maintenance.

    The employee must frequently be able to use full range of physical effort to include lifting, carrying and positioning of objects up to 100 pounds in weight; prolonged work in tiring or uncomfortable positions; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, stretching and climbing; constant standing on hard surfaces.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions in all City related facilities to include the Golf Course. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration or risk of electrical shock. Power tools, motor/landscaping equipment, construction equipment, toxic fumes, weather.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
